Those initial gubbins are interesting. Were they often used on American hats? I've only ever seen them on hats sold in Europe (mostly French).

Now that I couldn't tell you. I know some hats hat the initials embossed into the sweat. I had a 1910s Feiges (Chicago) hat that looked to have hat these typewriter keys removed at some point. It's possible.

I've had letters attached to the sweatband on one English purchase, but I've certainly seen them in several photos of US hats whilst doing my desperate ebay trawls.

I was rather pleased that the eBay seller accepted my offer on this "Newt at The Royal" Montecristi.

I believe the Newt hats are (or were) outsourced to Optimo in Chicago.

The seller of mine was finally able to get an invoice sent to me. I raised concerns about her very low shipping rate - $7.90 with the Optimo box - and said I'm certainly open to a higher shipping bill for a well-packed box. The price never went up, so I'm hoping that my gamble doesn't bring me a taped, crushed Optimo box with stamps on it. This internet gambling thing is troubling.

I'm completely blown away that no one else (other than one other bidder) was interested in this 1917-1923 Dobbs Tuxedo Hat. And that bidder wasn't terribly interested, by just bidding the minimum. I figured I would be paying close to my max bid on this one, or lose it altogether, but am dumbfounded. I'm really hoping the size is correct, as that's my size, but even if not, it was still a good win.

I was the one who put the opening bid on that one. I was going to go pretty high on that one because I have always wanted a tuxedo hat, especially one that old. Some family/personal issues came up and I totally forgot about the auction. I had bid on a few oldies during that time frame, but lost them all because I was preoccupied with the family stuff. I hope its your size and that it fits, Brad! I'm really looking forward to seeing photos of that one.

I recently won (on a tip by Manfred) this rare pre 1940 C. G. Wilke Velour. Supposedly size 58cm and it appears to be good condition. Looking forward to its arrival.

Splintz, I thought that was you. Just put it in the mail to you. It is wool, but very nice quality - the best I've seen. I think you'll like it even if you just wanted the initial stamps, but isn't it too big for you?

Also, would have stitched the liner back in. Usage note: Oxyclean is too strong for grimy liners, next time I'll try a gentle dish washing liquid.
