I'm completely blown away that no one else (other than one other bidder) was interested in this 1917-1923 Dobbs Tuxedo Hat. And that bidder wasn't terribly interested, by just bidding the minimum. I figured I would be paying close to my max bid on this one, or lose it altogether, but am dumbfounded. I'm really hoping the size is correct, as that's my size, but even if not, it was still a good win.

Frank, I've been there so I know what it's like to lose out on a hat just because I was lo-llygagging for no good reason.

I bought several sizes of crown blocks this weekend from a seller who recently acquired a quantity at the Beaver brand hat factory auction. I just can't decide whether "buying now" at an average price of just over $40 each was brilliant or sappy considering the volume that he will probably be listing in the weeks to come. I am leaning toward brilliant because I have been looking for some time and have largely been priced out of the market until now.

Now I have all of the most common sizes (6 7/8 to 7 1/2) of open crown blocks to go with a handful of 1933 stamped Diamond brand brim flanges that I bought a while back. I can't wait until they arrive, so that I can finish a beaver/rabbit/nutria blend hat body that I ordered from the floor of the Winchester hat factory last year. It will be my first ground-up hat build, although I have completely rebuilt a few.

I'd have bid, but I have a Whippet that is almost exactly the same. I probably should have bought the 3X then sold the Whippet for $$$

Thanks for the love, David, even if the form is only verbal . The hat has a great felt on it. Nicer than my three Whippets. But I'm patient. The right man for the hat will come along (I hope).

The band is what really caught my attention, looks interesting. I've been to the pre-40s hat thread and have seen a lot of those hats having the tags sewn on just like this hat. Is that a trait of pre-40s hats?

That one is 50s, due to the plastic liner protector, reeded sweat, sweatband embossing, etc.

Easy ways for Pre-40s hats are taped sweat seams, deep embossing, no plastic protector, etc.

Picked this one up off feebay, and just got it in hand. The auction pics are pretty good of it as is, and I'll post an update later after I have put it into "BSA Trim" and had it fitted a little better.

But here's the question. The seller called it a champ hat, probably based on the box. but there is no evidence on the hat itself of that being the case. Anybody know anything about it from what you can see? The sweat is completely unmarked on the finish side, and has what looks like "74" in grease pencil on the inside, and under the oiled band liner, is another 7 1/4 size tag, and the shown union workers label. The 4 crown vent grommets and the two strap ports are green painted brass.

In any case, I love it. It's miles above either the new official scout hats or most of the military/police versions out there, in terms of quality and finish. I would like to know a bit more though.

The box has a designation on the other corner from the one shown in the pic (coincidence? I think not) that says "Californian, Charcoal Grey 7 1/4". Not sure what a Champ Californian is, but the smokey the bear definitely is not grey. So I'm at a loss. Any info much appreciated!

Californian is a featherweight model by Champ. Definitely not a campaign style.
