Stetson 100 goes for $425. Stetson100

I don't understand why people are considering this one to be bought "high". To me, the history adds at least $100 to that hat. Even without that history, it's a large size 100. You can order an Optimo or a couple of hats from Art any day of the week. Good luck finding more than one or two of these - in this size - in a given year.

As to the Whippet - the fool and his money have been parted.

I was watching that Stetson 100 but it got out of my league quick. The name in the hat (Robert B. Tootell) was unusual though so I Googled it. There was a man by that name who was in the Eisenhauer Administration. He was the head of the Farm Credit Association. Might have had some effect on the price.

I'm with you on that one... it's not at all an unusual price price for a Stetson 100.

In as much as it sold for much more than I would pay for that particular hat, I think it's a high price. But I agree that the price isn't particularly unusual these days. Just two years ago, this particular hat would have sold for much less. High prices are slowly but surely becoming the norm.

I can see a fedora bubble coming. In a few years it will crash and we will have another recession.
:(

Honest to goodness I worry about the market on hats these days. It is almost to the point now where a guy that loves hats can`t get a quality vintage at a reasonable price. I would love to own a whippet but with prices like this I had to get a custom copy made. Maybe I am just cheap but for this or any such hat to sell for that price makes me cause of concern in the market.

Thx Alan and Lefty....;)

For you non-math/stats majors out there, some observations: While two bidders were fearsome, the winning bid was placed by a prior bidder and within $10 of the two next lower bids and $38 of the last non-dueling bidder. And who knows how many snipes came in a few bucks short? Not apparent exuberant solo flight to me; and certainly not on a desirable, rare hat in that condition and size.

...yeah, but.

It's not as though I am saving hats for retirement but Mr. Bowers, who sadly seems little in evidence here lately, has made the point that these lids resemble other appreciating collectables in that;

-They were made by no longer extant manufactures

-The supply continues to diminish

-They were made with skills, materials & techniques & by a workforce largely lost to us.

That said- those sales prices are "irrational exuberance", to quote Dr. Greenspan.

To me this is all academic- the new listing techniques on ePAYseem calculated to drive the smallholders from eBay. I can't find =*&^-all compared to 24 hrs. ago!

I am gonna have to return to junk stores.

I'm no expert but I have been studying the prices on these things for about 18 months and my first instinctive guess on seeing this hat was 'an easy $500'. I was a little surprised it didn't make it!

What has Obama done that has sent Whippet prices so high? I'm sure he is behind it. Some sort of hat Socialism.
Sorry, I can't help it. Every day something else gets placed on the Obama did it list.... :)

That a 100 only brought that price when Whippets are fetching $810 and $405 in the last couple of days is surprising.
I have a very nice gray with black ribbon Whippet and think it is nice hat but it ain't a new VS with custom specified details nice. It damn sure isn't TWO VS made to measure with personally specified details nice.
It really puzzles me. Whippets are one of the most numerous hats ever made and I'm not getting the run up in price. For something without a small case "i" in front of its name to create such a craze is beyond me.

Come to think of it I think my 7 1/8 grey with black ribbon hat might be an iWhippet.
I could have sworn I asked it what I should wear with it the other day and it answered me in a synthesized voice.
