I snagged this early century hat. It's a 7 3/8, and I'm hoping for a generous fit. If it's snug, look for it in the classifieds.

After rereading Dinerman's sticky, the decade guide, I'm not too clear on the age, 20's, 30's, 40's? Opinions most welcome! Perhaps when it arrives there'll be some telltale clues. 'Til then, here are a few of the seller's pics:

Nice tall crown:

Its unreeded, closely stitched sweat:

The liner:

The bow doesn't look frayed, but I may attempt that subtle change. The brim is 2 1/4:

It's a Statoliner and a nice hat.
I had made one of the 2 offers and the seller came back with a pretty good counteroffer. Very tempted, but I really have other priorities for a while.

Did you buy it, Tom? If you did I'll be looking forward to seeing some good photos soon.

I did! Definitely will take some pictures after I crease it to my liking.

I just won 2 hats from ebay and I'm hoping they were good deals. One is a Dobbs that I won for $20 and another is an Adam that I won for $7. I figured I'd bid low and if I won, so be it. They looked ok from the pics, but we'll see. I'm not sure much about them and was hoping that someone could tell me something just by the auctions and pics, but if it requires more pics, then I'll take some when they arrive. The links are what I had to copy out of email since I'm at work taking a break, but hopefully they work ok:

Can't tell for sure, but the Adam looks more like a guild (cavanagh) edge than a plain overwelt.
If so, you get a very good deal.

Here's a seller trying to pass off a basic Stetson western (reshaped and brim-trimmed) as an Open Road. At least that what it looks like.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220939176130&fromMakeTrack=true#ht_6691wt_794

I called the seller on it, and he admitted the "mistake" but still hasn't changed the listing:

Dear randoochie,

You have a keen eye and you are correct. The hat has been trimmed and the term Open Road was mistakenly used in the description. Thanks.

I have a Strat that is a darkish blue/grey color. Looks like this one from the first picture.
Seller didn't do any favors for not listing it as a Stratoliner for sure...
Probably true, but easily recognizable by most of us, I'd guess. I must have far too optimistic an outlook, as I gasped at the $199 BIN. Then again, I shoot myself in the foot all the time by paying $60 here and $75 there for more entry level hats when I'd probably be more satisfied paying a higher price less often... and my basement would be a little more roomy!

Cool, thanks. Any thoughts on the brim width for that style? I don't know much about the Adam brand, and although I could have asked the seller, I figured the bid was low enough it didn't matter. I should have the hat in my hands in about a week so it's not a big deal. :D

Also, does anyone have thoughts on the Dobbs Fifth Avenue? I'm almost convinced the color in the pics is off since it's listed as a charcoal grey, but aside from that, I'm not sure whether it would be good for a diamond crease, or even what the felt is like on that one.

You small headed folks get all the great deals! Both look great to me. The Adam does appear to have a felted edge, but you're not kidding about those Dobbs photos-- they're so grainy I can't tell a thing about the color from them. Probably trust the seller's description-- charcoal grey would seem like a good estimate.

Thanks. It's good to know that they're likely good deals, especially since I haven't told my wife I accidentally won them... now that she's agreed to my ordering a custom hat from Falcon Park. :D
