Those D'Orsay curls are really nice, but are pretty much obsolete in current times! So you're probably talking about a vintage derby being reblocked, and my guess is that a) you'd be dealing with far too much shellac/stiffness, and b) most vintage derbies simply won't have enough crown height to support a center crease.

Having learned from others here, it's a pretty safe bet on Ebay that if the hat has a more even pencil curl or "German curl" and a noticeably wider ribbon, then the felt is probably going to be soft and the crown is probably going to be a little taller: A Homburg, even if the photo shows an open crown.

Don't see that everyday. Though why does it have vents AND a liner?

1940's Crofut & Knapp

Received this 1940's Crofut & Knapp Fedora earlier this month:

Beautiful hat that doesn't look like it was ever worn. Un-reeded sweatband conforms to my head like no other hat I've owned. The hat is nearly flawless other than a few minor moth nibbles. Wonderful chocolate brown hat that is a bit darker than it shows in the photo. Absolutely love it!

dlvh, what a great looking hat! That's a fine score, indeed. I love the straightforward declaration on the sweatband: "Clarke's Good Clothes." Nothing fancy about quality, after all. :)

Thanks for the nice words randooch! Wish I knew where "Clarke's Good Clothes" is/was.

Now I just want to find a similar hat in a Dove Gray.

Nice win... I hope you'll share some additional photos of the hat. Clarke's Good Clothes was in Tulsa, OK.

Hi Alan...thanks for that information! Do you happen to know when Clarke's went out of business?

My camera is on the fritz right now (batteries are completely drained of juice) so I'll have to see if I can get my hands on another camera, or new batteries very soon.

An Esquire ad lists them as still open in 1982... I'm not sure they made it to 1990.
