Well, my late 40s Mallory "Plastic Felt" came in today.

I was not sure what to expect, but I have to say it's a sporty little hat. I like it.

The second photo below matches the color of the hat perfectly.

I take it that this was made in the late 40s by Stetson after they bought the Mallory name?

Similar but different. Not the same hat.
Yep, knew it was different. Brim I think is a bit wider (though I'm not sure it is the 3 inch claimed in the ad, looks closer to 2 3/4 or 2 7/8 to me, IIRC, the Whippet started out around 2 1/2). And the crown is perhaps a bit taller (a plus in my mind). And maybe straighter (were the Whippets quite straight, or did they have a bit of taper?).

The binding on the brim is certainly very similar, and that I think is the Whippet's singular most distinctive feature. Actually, this hat quite reminds me of a vintage, bound edge version of my Nostalgia, which I am quite taken with. Maybe sort of pre-Whippet. (Wonder if this might pre-date the Whippet, probably not though).

It's a sweet looking hat. I would have bought it if it were my size.

Thanks, if it had been $20 or $40 more, I might have held off. But at $80 (plus shipping), I felt it was just slightly too good a deal to pass up. I doubt it would have been there long had I let it go. Must've been listed an hour or two before I bought it, and it was a fluke I happened along to search when I did. No, I take that back. Destiny. A much better ring, that ;).

It feels nothing like "plastic," I have to say. It feels jut like any cloth hat. I think it feels like a wool (but more rigid because of all the seams, of course, not floppy).

Interestingly, the brim snaps up and down just like a fur felt fedora. It is not in a fixed position.

To my eye from a few feet you can't tell it isn't like any other fedora until you get close enough to see the many seams in the construction.

It is pretty cool. And I am happy that it is in nearly new condition. All labels present, no tears or damage.

Hey guys. I just won my first fedora off eBay on Friday and I got it in the mail today. It's a Royal Stetson and I was hoping some of the more knowledgeable folks could help me get an approximate date on it. From my own research I'm guessing it's from the '60's, but I'm pretty much a novice so any input would be greatly appreciated. Also just to note, they grey is a bit darker than it appears in the pictures.

Really? I guess I'm alone on this one ...

Hey, even if it didn't turn out to be a great hat, I was the only bidder and got it for $9.99! It was worth it for the speculation alone. And I am quite happy with it, actually. I am not much of a fan of fedoras made from anything other than fur felt, but this one is interesting, somewhat rare, and still vintage since it is from 1948 or '49 or so. I think Lefty was saying he'd only ever seen one other "plastic."

It is great for a casual wear, too. Looks good with just jeans and a t-shirt.

Yep. If you hadn't bid, I was thinking of picking that one up just to handle it (which you'd really appreciate if you understood the extent to which that goes against my nature). While it might not be the most desirable hat, it's certainly one of the rarest.
