Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

that is truly one of the weirdest things in this thread. Odd in the extreme.

Picked up this mystery hat today:
The Hobo by Dobbs

Hobo.jpg

It didn't sell the first time it was listed, so I bid on it the second time around on a lark. Pretty sure it's NOT a man's hat, though I'm perplexed as to everything else about it. It looks like an unblocked hat body with little shellac that they slapped a label and pin on. Also looks like it's meant to be some kind of traveling hat.

Any ideas on the era? Since I know very little about women's hat styles, my only guess is the '20s, as it seems like a cloche style, something I could imagine on a flapper. I also expect the name Hobo wouldn't have been popular once we got to the Depression. Were hats like this popular in the '50s or '60s?

It says the name is trademarked, but I could find no record of it on uspto.gov, so that was no help.

As it happens, Brad, I have one, with the original explanation.

Although this one is far too small for me, I'm not sure it's meant to be a kid's hat.
No idea why you think it's not a man's hat. Why would they put a man on the pin
for a woman's hat?

BTW, this is not a raw hat body. It has a really nice feel to the felt and that felt is definitely pounced.

Unfortunately, due to moronic changes to Flickr.com, I will not be posting the pictures I just took for Brad.
I won't be posting any pictures until I find a new photo hosting service. I'll send them directly to Brad.

I took a high risk chance with this 1920s cloche. The seller started the bidding at $39.99 and a BIN price of $75. Of course I wanted to get it as cheaply as possible so I kept my fingers crossed that no one else would buy it at 75 or try to bid lower. I set my snipe to 74 just in case somebody else had the same idea and voila! No one else bid and I got the cloche for $39.99! I am still in shock that nobody BIN or even tried to bid on it:

I won this one recently and it came in this weekend. Other than the liner fading a bit it really does look unworn. With a different crease I really like this one although it is borderline too stingy for me.

That is wild. So, what is the original explanation?

As far as photo hosting goes, I have found photobucket to be very user friendly...

Cheers,

Feltfan has a brochure that came with his Hobo and has kindly sent me the photos. It becomes a little clearer now. I will post them in the Dobbs Diner once I receive my Hobo. Stay tuned...

Let me guess. Is the idea that you put the cone on your head and then fold up the "brim" (so to speak)? Kind of a "hillbilly" look that used to be featured on TV shows years ago?

Congrats on the win. Is that a typical price you pay for a cloche?
Consistently low prices may mean you are collecting something others do not go for. A win-win situation for you. ;)

Yes, I buy cloches, but there is usually more competition for it. I think in this case maybe because the inside headband needed repair, which isn't a big deal, plus the fact that it was not signed on the inside may have led to lack of interest.

A few days ago, I picked up a vintage Miller for next to nothing. It came in today's mail, and I was quite surprised by a few things. First, it says 100% fur felt...it wasn't advertised as such, so I was pleasantly surprised. It has a great feel to it. Second, the bow is actually in the back. I've seen pictures here of hats with the bow in the back, but this is the first time I've ever experienced one myself. The brim is a bit too stingy for my personal taste. I'm sending it off to be cleaned and blocked, and when it gets back, I'll likely put it back on eBay. It'll make somebody a great hat.

I can't exactly tell what sort of bash the hat had originally...if anybody has any suggestions about how I should have it done, feel free to chime in. I'm open to suggestions.
