Orphaned Hat Society

I just snatched this orphan from the Bay. Noone else bid. I seem to be making a habit of picking up rejects.

Yes I know, it's plaid and it's wool and it's not the coolest lid around.
But it's an Adam!

Gotta love the description as a "Gangster Hat" - what is that? Unless your grandad is a gangster this has got to be the least gangster-esque hat I've ever seen - with the possible exception of those kids hats with the helicopter on top.

You're becoming the JtL of size 7-1/4. Congratulations

Why, thank you. I'm very flattered that you would say that, but I have a long way to go to reach that stature. lol lol

I think you're probably right. I bought a Shudde bros about six months ago that was stiff as cardboard, so I've stayed away from them since then.
At my uncle's house I got to see my Great Grandfather's Shudde Bros. fedora (My uncle wouldn't give it up to me, no matter how hard I tried!). Here is a pic:

The felt was very thin and very stiff, like cardboard as you say.

Not all of us size 7s; I have yet to land one, but I'm working on it! I hate I missed that one for sure.

Someone got a fantastic deal on this hat, and I lost my ***. Looks like it's time to start using reserves and to quit speculating at antique stores!

Ouch. Hopefully, you win more than you lose. I'll bet you do. That hat has a lot of desirable details going for it but they seem to total up to a rather funny looking little lid. Not exactly a Whippet in terms of eye appeal, if ya' know what I mean. Reserves turn me off. Hopefully you'll bounce back from this and rake in on some other sales. Chin up, buddy.

Thanks, Gene - it IS a funny-looking lid :) I had eight hats on ebay, and overall will break even, which is all I hope for.

On a more interesting note, the Nutria arrived today. Very Open-Roadish in style - I'm pleased. The felt is like nothing I've handled before - thick and durable, but also soft and pliable like an old 3X. Liner sewn at the side, circular '40s sweatband logo. It's on the stretcher, working its way up to 7 1/4:
