I found it and it has your name on it! You know I need some gentle reminders. There are a couple other ones you'll like.

So I recently acquired this derby on the bay for a Jackson. My guess is, due to the tags inside, the age sits squarely in the 1900-1920’s range. Can anyone here narrow that down?

It’s a solid hat that really doesn’t look worn, however there are some small dents, a line or two that looks like a tear, but aren't, and a couple of threads that attach the reeding to the hat have popped. The ribbon has a light bit of shining on some of the edges as well.

Not in the photos is a frayed bow and the iron cross ventilation on the top. Not much of a derby person but have a soft spot for WA hats. Oh and the Spokane store “Fogelquist Clo. Co. opened in 1908.

View attachment 263605 So I recently acquired this derby on the bay for a Jackson. A bit confusing because there was also a 1960’s size tags. My guess is due to the tags inside, the age sits squarely in the 1900-1920’s range. Can anyone here narrow that down . Tremendous! You did quite well on that one. Congratulations

My understanding is that the 1900 medallion is post 1900 (maybe obvious) and probably pre-1915.

I read through this thread before but some of the details escape me, it has more info on the Stetson medallion crests, world’s fair award stamps, etc:

I have a similar Stetson with the 1900 Grand Prize Paris embossment on the sweatband. It also has a "snowflake" set of aeration holes in the top of the crown.

I can't recall where I read it, but my understanding was similar to what Daniel posted, mainly that the hats were made starting right after the 1900 prize was awarded and continued through the teens and, maybe, into the early 20's.

If you can photograph it safely, would like to see the LOTXXXX number imprinted on the reverse side of the sweat in the front of the hat.

If it is LOT 1538, what would that show?

Looking under there, I found a felt pad, which I immediately removed because mine runs small for me. Now it fits better! Serendipity!

A few days ago on this same thread I posted some rambling self righteous comments directed to a fellow lounge member that were completely uncalled for and out of line. I was wrong for doing so and knew it from the moment I pushed “post”. In a moment of stupidity I was not only rude and offensive, I made a fool and a hypocrite of myself. Who the hell am I to decide or say who should have what or how much?
I may not have accumulated as many hats as Max but I’ve got way too many..running out of room. Do I wear them often enough? Heck some don’t even fit. But I’ve got em, they’re cool and I admire them just as much as anybody else does theirs.
The irony.. Max’s “over indulgence “ is evidently just hats. I’ve got closets full of vintage leather jackets, wool coats (and I live in the desert where winters are short and mild). Another one full of vintage suits and ties and I had even forgotten of the drawers full of vintage sunglasses..a dozen vintage helmets....
If my wife caught wind of this there would be some serious trouble and house cleaning here in Buckeye. Bottom line I’m as guilty and more so of “over indulgence” (hoarding) than the next guy
...that’s generally what us hypocrites do.
In reality I’m a very private keeps to myself kinda guy...I generally mind my own business and stay out of other peoples business. I guess in a moment of weakness I let the whining of a second place loser surface. I thought about trying to blame it on the post just before me for getting me started. (Only kidding). I take full responsibility for my rude and offensive behavior and ashamed of myself for so doing.
I’ve already apologized to Max and I’m apologizing to all here who I irritated and offended as well.
I’ll try to remember...

LOTXXXX imprints appear to be sequential and if so can be useful evidence in placing a hat into the timeline of Stetson production. The small sampling collected can be seen here. LOT 1538 would be a low (early) number in a sequence that runs to about LOT8000 and disappears sometime around 1942. This is far from foolproof. There are a couple of examples of early hats with high LOTXXXX numbers that might indicate an earlier sequence ran its course before being restarted sometime around 1900.

The derby you posted above has a number of features that suggest it is from the the first or second decade of the 20th century... large scalloped size tag, embossed sweatband (frequently seen with the Fray imprint) - a LOT1538 imprint would be further support for this dating. Having multiple clues is useful as we have a lot of conjecture of our own making on these pages and some guesses are better than others. In the end, nothing beats a date stamp.
