Just bought this one. I waited until the last 15 seconds, wanted to bid 365, pressed 0 instead of send, and mistakenly bid $3650 dollars. It went for almost $900.
At first I thought I'd sent the mistaken bid too late and lost. When I saw what it went for, I was relieved I hadn't won, because I got a notice saying I had lost, but then got a notice saying I had won it! Now I have mixed feelings about the whole thing, but I paid for it already.[emoji51]

Wow. That’s a great story. A shame that there is another hat nut running amok out there, or it would have cost you $62. But assuming he is young and healthy you always have a chance to sell it again.

The seller - with his several additions and addendums - clearly states that he is withdrawing the 7 3/4 sizing statement - so going with "I bid on it because it was a 7 3/4" probably won't fly with eBay folks.

Your best case will be to go with the truth of your bidding error - adding an inadvertent 0 when all you wanted to bid was $365. That is more believable.

That would leave the winning bid at about $375 as someone else bid $888 to beat your $365 bid.

Still a very good outcome for the seller I think because this fedora looks to be 90's/2000 era hat. Very average quality felt - lower crown at probably 4 inches - and a very tapered crown - pointing to a very recent production style. It is not a $375 hat. I would say it is a sub $100 fedora.

While I agree the bidding went a little crazy, theres no way this hat is a 90's/2000 era hat. Its more than likely 50's.

Yeah, I know. Thing is, it was my mistake, not his. I was hasty and careless. And I hate going back on my word. I will forget the 800 dollar difference in a month, but begging out of a bid will stay a lot longer. This will teach me to be more careful, dammit! [emoji34]

I don’t think Knox made the Vagabond King during the times you referenced. It looks to be decades older than your estimate.

I am sure you guys are right about dating. Maybe it's the poor pictures, but this particular Vagabond King doesn't look like it has aged very well. It just doesn't look to have that tall straight crown of the era.

The other thing in all this...I need to start eBaying some of my (compared to this one anyway) pristine 50's Strats, OR's and Alessandria's in 7 5/8 and 7 3/4.

The heartache of parting will be somewhat eased at $900 a pop.

I'm going to venture to guess it may be a 7-7/8. I remember looking at this earlier. After he posted his addendum with OD pictures, which are pretty much useless, I clicked "contact seller" and was going to ask him to measure the length and width of the opening. As most of us know, (L + W)/2 gets you pretty close.

It turns out someone had already asked that question, which appeared under the "Other" radio button. I don't remember the specific measurements, but I'm pretty sure they totaled 15.75, thus making it a 7-7/8. Not sure why he didn't include this info as an addendum on the main page.

While definitely not accurate, if one was to use the OD of 25.5 and estimate say 3/8 loss per side (allowing for ribbon/bow, felt, sweat thickness) that would yield an ID of 24.75, which corresponds to 7.88, and thus approximately 7-7/8. To be fair, I cherry picked 3/8 to make the numbers fit, but I'm just trying to justify why he would use the OD to determine size.

Wish I had a better prognosis for you. For your sake hopefully my memory is crap, or that the seller incorrectly measured length and width. If not, that's a lot padding.

Unless care is taken by the photographer, the true shape and height of a hat's crown are difficult to ascertain from the wide angle lens on a cell phone. And though there were eras and fashion trends, the crown shape on vintage hats were all over the place, much as they are in the profile of a sport coat. Hence the huge array of blocks and flanges in a hat shop of the era.

He said he understood, and that he would see what the next offer was, and asked if I would be OK with paying $300 for the hat.
I said of course, and that he is a very decent person, and he is.

Afterwards I emailed Ryan, and told him I should pay the $365 I intended to bid, and not the $300 he asked me if I was willing to pay. He hasn't replied.
