Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I doubt I will ever buy from eBay again. My account was "limited" by PayPal because of "unusual activity". I really don't know what was unusual about it. All I did was send about four payments, and buy three hats through eBay. I don't know if it is because I live in Mexico, but I called PayPal in the US and they confirmed that they want me to send the following:

A copy of my passport.
A copy of an ID no more than 6 months old.
A copy of my credit card statement.
A copy of a recent utility bill that has to be in my name and mailed to the address I registered with.
A four-digit code that came with a $1.95 "temporary charge" that took three days to post in my account.

I already submitted the code, but they insist they want everything else.
All these absurd requirements would expose me to identity theft, of course, so I refused.

And, to top it all off, they will not even allow me to cancel my account with them! When I called I was told this was included in the contract I electronically signed when I registered. If all this is not illegal, it should be, because I don't owe PayPal anything, and I don't wish to open an account with them again anyway.

I already placed a restriction of my own on all charges from PayPal with my credit card company, and I suggest everyone look closely at their contract with PayPal.

After buying 17 hats in the last week, maybe this restriction is a good thing. If I really want to buy a hat from eBay that badly, I will have to ask my son or one of my friends in the US to buy it for me, and I will hesitate to do so unless it absolutely is a great buy.
And there is always Optimo, where Tiffani treats me the way I feel I deserve

And finally, I think that having 28 great hats should be enough for me.

:mad: Sorry to hear this Max. I know that international bidders have problems with shipping sometimes. I have been helping out Stefan with some of these transactions.

They treated me as if I were begging for a loan without collateral, Red, instead of a customer that had just trusted them with thousands of dollars of his hard-earned money. I even thought I was being scammed. Their perception of reality is unfathomable.

My only problem with shipping from the US is with the Portuguese customs.
If the package is shipped through ebay's GSP, in 15 days I get the item since Portuguese customs *DON'T* put their pawns on it.
If it is shipped in "regular mail" and have to cross Portuguese customs, a month or more is the waiting time.
Portuguese customs knows they don't have enough personal for the job but they don't hire or do anything to make it faster.

Ah, but you get to live in Portugal... Well worth it.

Just FYI: some consider it bad form to list live auctions here unless you’re the seller. It doesn’t bother me, but I did something similar once upon a time and there was more than a little vitriol sent my way. I get “just wanting to be helpful” but despite the friendships here we are also in competition and it’s expected that everyone does their own looking. If you want to send a PM to a specific member(s) that’s cool. By the way, if the hat was my size I’d be all over it. :)

You know, Brent, you are really good at showing us newbies about FL etiquette, and you do it with so much tact!
I really appreciated it. Thanks again for that one. :)

NOS Biltmore Imperial dove gray homburg. It’s one size too small (7 1/2) but I have a hat stretcher and a block...it will fit :)

Don’t do it. This Biltmore does not have the felt quality for a stretched reshape. Been there done that on this exact model. I am 61 to 62 - like you and this hat doesn’t have the size presence for a man of your stature. It is a smallish structure homburg. It will look like a beany on you as it does on me. Mine is a 62 so I just tried to shape it and not stretch it. It looks impish on me.

No doubt you’re right, but after receiving it I decided it was not going to work and sold it to a fellow Lounger who is a size 60. I currently have another dove Biltmore (size 61) in the mail, but I agree with you on preferring the larger proportioned homburgs.

I would think not. I have a friend that went there recently, and ran out of adjectives.
My friend is not easily impressed.
Viewing from a turist point it's great.
Not so great if you really live here.
Don't know if you read about Madonna's problems (Yes the pop singer is really living in Portugal), but things are not being easy even for her.

Don't know if it was vintage or if it was just a badly made hat, nor I do need more hats (oh god) but still feel compelled to bid. It flown away.

I was watching that one as well. I thought I might expand my Valentine the Hatter collection (from two to three hats). The condition was too rough and my wallet too empty to pull the trigger. Maybe someone here got it and will share details.
