Tommy--you're correct. Most of the seller's hats were on "sale" last week. Some may think it was too much, but with custom hats that can't quite match that quality going for similar prices, I thought it was worth it. (That's not a knock on custom hatters, by the way.) I watched that one for a long time, did my homework, and told myself if it ever fell to $500 I would go for it. Having received it, I can say it is an amazing hat.

I don't think $500 is too, too much for a 7-3/8 Stetson 100. Maybe a tiny bit high, but not bad for that large a size. Higher than that, though, and I think it is too much. The $1,000 was absolutely absurd.

If it was a size 7-1/8 or under, tho, even $500 would have been too much.

Still, I think someone will be fairly happy with a $500 outlay on that one.

My favorite is when they boldly claim a date that is OBVIOUSLY wrong. Then you ask them and inform them of the actual date, they write back and say "well, we really didn't know."
Didn't know? Then WHY did you boldly state a date if you had no real clue?

fedoracentric--I'm happy! I funded it by selling some other items on Ebay, so it's just recycling. ;)

I would agree with everything you said. No way was I going to pay a grand for it. Even when it re-posted at $800, it was too much for me. But as I said, with some custom hats selling for over 1K I would argue that this hat, in its current almost pristine condition, is a far better product.

LOL, yep.

You know, it wouldn't rankle me so bad if they said something to the effect of "I am not sure but this hat might be from the..."

Instead, they often just unequivocally state "this hat is from the 1930s" (or whatever era they WANT it to be from) when in truth they don't know that as a fact at all and are just spitballing with absolutely no facts at all to back them up.

I don't mind them not knowing. I mind them outright lying about it.

I agree especially if you are buying without the intent of selling it and trying to get the $$ back out of it.

I'm of two minds with ebay buys. On one hand, I hate to pay a top dollar knowing I could likely never sell it and recoup my $$. On the other hand, sometimes a hat just comes up that you feel like you MUST get no matter if you pay on the high side and could probably never resell it for that price or not. Its a fine line to walk, of course. But most of the time I won't pay toward the high end of the current market because I just don't want to lose the cash on a later resell.

I've already been stung a few more times than I care to mention since it seems that prices have come down a bit of late.

I only be buying for had to ware that one reason i try to keep the cost way down.. i did grab one Scala/Dorfmen Pacific that turn out to be too large for me so it will get re-soled at some point . need to see what priced at originally then mark it right DP make some good and bad hats. This one is all Black wool with white liner .. I will post pics later. Looked on DP site it not current hat.
What is the average price people here have paid for a hat off eBay? I think I have gone over $5 to $50 but I stayed under that amount on all 11 hats i picked up this year.
The hats I use for my Steampunk events were $50 and under except for the one I got at the State Fair as Off brand name wool with Liner top hat.. Should have stuck to ebay
I think next to the last Stetson I got the best hat I picked up was the Collapsible top hat for under $20 after shipping with liner and all in tacked(they didn't know it was a Collapsible top hat). You don't get deal like that ever day I was shock as took it out of the box and knew right off what I got.. And it fits.
I know the Derby i got was Id her as from lat 50's not the 20'd as the sell on ebay stated and I let them know and they offer to re-fund me I said no it was still a great hat.
I like to ware my hats not just hang them up or store them away. I like having some different from the norm and waring it out and about.
I not sure what those selling a hat at $1400 are thinking other that A sucker is born every minute. It has to be Greed factor to blindly try to sell something know nothing about or find you have to make up history to sell it for such a price. I keep away from the High end item sales unless it is some I am selling . And you better believe if I post fact on something I researched it till I have the details to sell it clear.
I have Sign Baseball that will be going up but first i need to raise the funds to get it check for all the signature.. WE counted over 10 or more Hall of Fame player. I want the ball to be checked and a graded. It could be what getting me the top dollar when I post it .
Hats I can see one thing after theses last few month I noted .. no all hat are the same . they not identical to the next one.. Yes name and style will seem alike but the fur felt and and all there is very big difference in hat made 15 year ago vs one made in 1960 or 1950. Rabbit , Beaver , Mix blends of both.
They all seem to have that feel to them that is something not turn out on Line or made by machines.
I guess that can have high price on it when you WANT that "ONE HAT" that one you know about seen pictures but never found it for right price.. I guess If see it at a price you feel you can pay.. Then It is worth it I guess.

I was watching that one, but more out of curiosity than a serious urge to bid what I was sure it would take to win. I was a bit put out that somebody backdoor'd it, but mostly because I wanted to see what it would run up to. Congrats on a nice example of a rare style from the maker.
