Just picked this up on ebay
This is the first time I've bought anything related to hat making so I have a couple of questions. I'm assuming that this is a size 7 3/4 brim flange. If I have a hat with a wonky brim do I put it crown down into this and then press the brim to the flange while steaming to form it? What do the numbers and letters at the base of the flange stand for?

I would appreciate any info on this.
Thanks,
Sam

Yep - looks like a 7 3/4 flange for a narrow brim. The hat goes in crown first. The holes on the bottom mate with a flange stand like this one:

or you can use your own method to raise it up as in this exercise. The cloth can be tied off with a cord using the grooves on the outside perimeter. I'm sure there are other threads on the lounge about using a block and flange.

Thanks Alan,
Seeing as I don't have a flange stand or block yet I'll probably work something out to improvise a support and fill out the crown. How can you tell what the brim width is on this? Is it the markings or just eyeballing it?

hmm, that's awfully small. Do you think it would work with larger brimmed hats? At least for giving the brim the right general form? If not this may not be as useful a tool as I'd thought.

I really have very little experience working with a brim flange. Others here will be more knowledgable. But I think if one must compromise with one flange for many hats, having it too wide is preferable to having it too narrow.

Just bought this cap. Seller says it is from the 1880s-1900, but I think it may be newer than that, but who knows. I have no idea how to date caps! I really like the pattern on this one. Definately not for the summer with the fur lining.
