Dunlap vented derby sold at the St. Louis Clothing Co. in Sedalia, MO.

The tag is written in pencil, so the flash makes it difficult to read. But it states:

7 1/4
Lot 20152
Block 109 5 3/4
Finisher 22

The sweatband is reeded. Binding and ribbon are in very nice shape. Felt looks like it has lost some of its darkness. I wonder if that is from long term exposure to light. Also thought that it could be tobacco smoke stains, but there is no unpleasant odor to the hat.

Any thoughts on age? My understanding is that Dunlap was acquired by Knox in 1918. I'm thinking that this one might be from before or around that time.

Enjoy.

Certainly looks like it's from before the 1932 Knox & Dunlap acquisition by Cavanagh-Donna.

Fantastic!! Those crescent shaped vent holes are spectacular. Stylistically, it appears to be from the turn of the century, but could date to the late 1890's. Hard to tell based on style though, because there was a resurgence in tall derby crowns and shorter brims between 1912 - 1918. The size tag font looks like some 1890's derbies that I own. Either way, its definitely pre-1920.

Thanks so much for the info guys.

It is definitely one of the niftier hats I've come across. I love the tall crowned derbies. That would be terribly cool if it dated to before 1900.

I looked under the sweatband again and found another tag in the front that I was not expecting. I edited my post to add that. Perhaps it provides some more food for thought.

Enjoy.

See, that size tag makes me believe that hat is earlier than the 1912-1918 period. I have pre-1900's derbies that use very similar reorder tags and typography. I would go out on a limb and say that based on style cues and that early style reorder tag, that hat more than likely dates to the late 1890's - very early 1900's

1940's Dunlap "The Traveler"

I took a chance on this one. Its a size larger than I wear, and its a bit too big on me. This one will be going up for sale, but I wanted to document it here first.

This is SUPER lightweight. This hat is the exact same hat as the early 1940's Dobbs Cross Country. Same block number, crown height, and felt weight.

Good looking.

I guess this is the place for Dunlap hats..
So here's my small contribution.
I do mean small. it's only a 6 3/4 even then it's a bit big for me. 1831825309180849867.jpg

all right. Definitely need a little help with this one does not of course to be a vintage Dunlap but it does say Dunlap supreme I’m going to inspect it today it is my size it is a western style and the company appears to be Circle C brand hats. I’m thinking that the company had Dunlap make these hats for them but I’m curious if the hat is worth a $50 deal it appears in great condition for The price according to the owner I asked about the sweat band markings and all that they said was it has a SS and a C so that doesn’t really offer me much I’m going to look at it today. I do not know what SS means per felt wise or is it wool. it’s helpful though if somebody can give me some information about this western style Dunlap made for Circle C Brand because I can find nothing through Google or Bing or any other type of search engine concerning this hat and the circle c brand info on the linerhelp would be appreciated thank you
