Dunlop Twenty Block 5361, Depth 5 3/4

Mud brown Dunlop Twenty probably dates from 50-53! It has a 2" brim with Custom Edge (thin underwent) and a 5 3/4" open crown depth which is wrapped in a 1 5/8" grosgrain ribbon. The inside of the hat has an oilskin liner protector and a COMFIT leather sweatband. Brad posted some good information about the Paterson sweatband (COMFIT) in the Dobbs Diner thread (Pg. 126, Post 1252) which is helpful in dating HGA hat brands.

Well, I finally got to get into the Drive-in yesterday. Got home and this eBay find was waiting on my doorstep. Like most, I only seem to see Dunlap toppers on the site - fedoras seem to be rare as hens' teeth. Well, I got lucky, as the person running this auction took my best offer of only $25.

Dunlap Superior Quality Fedora. Color is a sort of battleship grey.

The before photo, as it came out of the box a little crushed. The lady that sold it to me indicated it was her late husband's hat and had been sitting in a box in the closet for many years, and also possibly belonged to the father of her late husband.

I steamed it to open crown and set it on a block for a short while, then got a crease in it.

I found no re-order tags, Union tags, or anything else. The size tag, which had become loose but was tucked back up under the sweat, is a simple gold tag.

It has the plastic liner tip, the felt is substantial and has a very smooth finish. It shapes like clay, and reminds me of a Stetson I have from about 1960. Any helps in dating this guy would be appreciated.

Specs:

Crown: 5 1/2" open
Brim: 2 3/8" bound

Charlie, that shot of you in the 7 1/4 looks all too familiar. Today I received an email from Tom Gomez (nice guy) informing me that he can't make a straw in my size. I'm beginning to think I should just take my head on tour and display it to pinheads the world over.
