A photo of the Duke of York, later to become King George V in 1910, stag hunting in Mauritius.
The only hatless gentleman is my great grandfather!

Fantastic photo. That's some kind of crazy brim treatment on the Duke's hat. Without a title to back it up, I'm not sure that I could walk out of the house like that.

First time I have seen one of those brims. I wonder if anyone has seen that style before?

So your ancestor is the only one in the photo NOT wearing a hat? :eusa_doh:

That is a great photo - nice selection of fuzzy Homboras.

It's got some of that Robin Hood style that became popular again in the 60s, but much more dramatic.

Here is one of the next Duke of York, 7th Duke of York, later to become King George VI, the current Queens father. Her mother, then Princess, is on the right. Photo taken at the Port Louis race track in early 1930`s.

The turn downed brim seems to have been worn in the tropics at the time.

Maybe that stingy, crown-wrapping brim was a style deemed more appropriate, I mean practical, for hunting? It would be less prone to snagging in surrounding vegetation, for instance, and would not get in the way when you placed the head next to the rifle for aiming.

None of the others sports such a style, but it could be some kind of "advanced concept" made for the DoW?

Anyway, cool pics!

The more I look at it, the more out of place your GGF seems. Like he was put in at a later date. No hat, shadow on the wrong side of his face, only one not looking at the photographer, vintage Photoshop job?[huh]

Nice try Sir!

This site is pretty anonymous, so I am not trying to prove anything to anyone - in fact I`d rather not spread family details in public anyway, nor try and defend your comment. I posted this for the historican significance of hats in the first place.

But what I will say is that he was neither of British-blood, nor had access to the latest fashion (in particular British) of the times, and hence certainly seems very out of place. He was actually the host in Mauritius. It does seem like he wore his best clothes, but they were clearly "out of date". The same will happen today - Afghanistan`s Karzai versus President Obama -who is out of place is up to your imagination, but certainly one of them is! Let`s leave the issue at that, and I`ll remove myself from further discussion on this subject if I may. Thanks for the comments anyway, I`m sorry it did`nt look genuine to you.
