Does anyone else equate currency with its jacket equivalent?

While sitting down with my wife and contractor discussing an increasingly expensive bathroom remodel, I found myself thinking, as we chose each additional upgrade, "that cabinet panel is an Aero" and "towel warmers = one Langlitz", etc...

I suppose it's part of the natural budget decision making, deciding where to direct the discretionary budget, but I'm not sure my wife really has a similar problem. In the long run, giving her a nice bathroom probably equals more jackets for me with less grief.

That's exactly what was in my head; it was a big finance planning weekend and were discussing the college funds for my three boys, and then the 32 Aeros for the bathroom, 10 Aeros for summer camps... I could see jackets disappearing left and right.

I play poker every week and I frequently think: I just won a couple of leather jackets, or vice versa (preferably the former and not the later).

I don't quite do that, but I now have an appreciation for Pounds and Euros. And when I hear of European world events, the first thought in my mind is "jeez, I hope x leather jacket company is alright"...

Yep, all the time. Not just jackets though, all kinds of 'luxury' items. Sad to say but when a countries currency takes a nose dive against the dollar (soon to be Pounds Sterling after I move) the first thing I think is 'Hmm, that means Item X is now ??% cheaper'. Good job I don't have a drug habit anymore, cough, cough!

Well, if it makes me a bad person that I keep hoping the US dollar nosedives so as to make a number of thnigs more affordable again..... I can live with that.

Growing up in Ireland, almost everyone of my grandparents' generation and even my parents' could at some time or another be heard to evaluate the price of something in temrs of "I worked for an hour to earn that money - is that item worth an hour's work?" I imagine the proliferation of zero hours contracts in recent years have brought back that sort of thinknig to a lot of folks. FWIW, I recently agreed to a lump sum for delivering a lecture to an outside contractor, and my first thought was "That's x proportion of my next jacket, is it worth it?"

I have a modest number of jackets because amassing a significant collection is like owning a yacht. If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it.

It's always funny to also see the rapid change in tourism habits in American cities when the dollar is weak, and the European tourists take great advantage. I'm sure that in Paris and other European cities see the same influx of Americans when the dollar is strong.

I heard that from my father many times growing up, especially when we broke something... "do you have any idea how many hours I have to work to replace that, etc...." Those were not "calm" conversations!

As a student I ( and a few of my peers) measured price in "Pints" ..... one pint being 56p in the Union Bar. It is interesting that if one uses this exchange rate a gallon of petrol is still the same price in Pints as it was in 1984. As an aside an Aero Highwayman was @200 pints .... a Schott 740n from Flip was 70 pints and a letterman leather sleeved baseball jacket (S/H was 50 pints). S/H Levis 501's were 30 pints

As a buyer of S/H and sale jackets this exchange rate doesn't quite work consistantly

No, never think of jackets like that. But I do think of airplane parts. For example, we have to do a total demolition on a property we own...that is equal to one new propeller for our Mustang!

I definitely equate currency with jacket purchases...as I do with any of my other "obsessions"! I even "cross-reference" them in more of a bartering sense..."if I sell THIS guitar, I can buy THAT jacket"...

You guys are nuts. The proper currency is to use is firearms. (Just in case any of you folks were not aware, Oklahoma has the largest number of firearms owned, per capita, of any state in the nation.)

It's actually not a bad comparison, as nicer handguns do run in a similar price range as jackets... don't get me started as I've been good and haven't bought one in about a year...
