Denim Jackets - New or Vintage

Not vintage but I’ve been enjoying this RGT jacket. “River wash” aka stone wash isn’t for everyone but 1) I like it, and it retains a fair bit of that crisp hand feel 2) not every item of clothing needs to be a project from blank slate to mega fades (in my opinion)

Thanks man I stayed away from these for a long time due to all the hype.

I suppose that’s why I decided against going for the tan waxed canvas one.

That being said it’s a well made jacket with nice materials in a flattering pattern, and I really like pocket set up

Just personal preference MrF, but I much prefer Types I and II, and seeing alternatives such as yours. IIIs are just too... everywhere. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Wear it in good health!

Recently bought an Oni Type-1 jacket and it's become my new favourite summer jacket. I can't recommend their denim enough: it's heavy, slubby and fuzzy, and has a slight green cast to it, which gives the jacket a really nice vintage feel.

Here’s a direct comparison between something new and the vintage piece that inspired it. Both super nice. These 80’s era Levi’s are just great and all over eBay for peanuts. The Sherpa is twice as thick as what the modern Levi’s product uses. The denim is Levi’s unmistakable 70’s, 80’s, 90’s stone washed 12-15oz stuff. Feels like a jacket made to shovel shit out of a barn in. Made in the USA.

Tagged a 42” Long, it’s anything but. 25” sleeve and 24” back. Important to get measurements as these can and obviously have been washed, so look out for shrinkage!

Hecho in Mexico Polo. Super plush, I dare say luxurious, tan Sherpa. A hair thicker and softer than the Levi’s OG. Sleeves cut more modern and trim. Denim is flimsy as is the quilted sleeve liner. Looks great though and plenty warm for winter.

I really like them both. I have to pull back the reigns as these jackets tend to get me carried away. I do still need one in black, preferably an older Levi’s.

so much better. Nice job! I tried doing something similar with a cream colored type 1 I bought. Didn't go so well. The blue I was going for ended up being more purple. Too bad Prince is dead, I could have sold it to him

Thought I'd share some thoughts on my new 23-oz Type III from Wingman Denim out of Indonesia. Those who know me know that I am cheap (aka champagne taste on a beer budget, lol). I would never spend $400 on IH heavy denim jacket, for example. No way. But a 23-oz selvedge Wingman for ninety bucks? Sure. There are some great things coming out of Indonesian menswear artisans, perhaps the most known being high-end boots. But the place is full of denim fans so local denim got to be at least respectable. TFLs own @navetsea mentioned Wingman Denim in one of his posts, so when they announced 23-oz jackets a few weeks ago, I jumped on it. And I am quite happy. I expected a slim, Asian cut, and I got it. I ordered a Medium, am slim-built 5-9 and 145 lbs, and got a t-shirt only fit. Which is what I wanted, anyway. The jacket is built like a tank (you'll see where I am going with this in the pics section, lol), but right off-the bat comfortable with good freedom of movement. Wingman knows what it is doing with the pattern and heavy substrate - armholes are right, shoulders are right, sleeves are right and the hem is right. Buttons will stop .22 rounds, and so will the thick vegtan patch on the inside. Lots of value for ninety bucks if you are after heavy denim. They have lots of other stuff, and if it is as good as this jacket, it is worth it. Here's the webpage:

That's awesome, I love big Smith and their Buckaroo was one of the coolest looking denim jackets.
I have a pair of their overalls and a puffer jacket that my grandfather brought back from the outlet or factory store when he went to visit his family back in Missouri.
He gave them to my dad who saved them for me till I was big enough to fit them.
I have a soft spot for big Smith, but don't actually own much of it.
One day I'll get myself a Buckaroo.

1980's late production US made Wranglers sherpa.

Nothing too fancy, but I'm definitely a Wranglers guy.
Their pants are my go-to, and I love their jackets ( the original US made examples anyways)
I Like the style, and how the hand pockets are kind of hidden in the panel lines.
I bought a new flannel lined Wrangler a couple years ago and overall it's fine quality wise, but the hand pockets are too far out.
Honestly all the pockets are poorly positioned.

It's the beater jacket that I wear working around the house and cleaning the workshop...ect

I also have this unlined counterpart to that one, from the same era.

Some of the last US made Wranglers jackets, and sadly it really shows on this one because there were so many stray threads hanging off all over the place.
