My great aunt Mary died recently,

http://www.billingsgazette.com/life...cle_44016dd8-ef5e-11de-a7ad-001cc4c002e0.html

From the article:
"Before she was married, Mary worked at the Security National Bank in Sioux Falls. In 1934, she was taken as a hostage by a group of bank robbers, including John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd, as they fled town following their robbery of the bank. She and four others were forced to ride on the running boards of the get-away car to keep pursuing police from firing at the criminals. She literally rode into history on a running board — and on March 17, 2004, she was inducted into the Minnehaha County Historical Society as an honorary member, and Sioux Falls Mayor Dave Munson issued a proclamation designating March 18-19 as “Mary Lucas Hawkins Days,” in honor of her bravery in the face of so much danger."

Highly decorated Army colonel dies in Texas

WACO, Texas (AP) -- A man considered to be the country's most decorated soldier has died.

Oak Crest Funeral Home in Waco, Texas, says retired Col. Robert Lewis Howard died Wednesday. He was 70. The funeral home obituary said that at the time of his death he was the most decorated American soldier.

Howard served in the Army from 1956 to 1992. He was nominated three times for the Medal of Honor, the nation's most prestigious award for combat veterans. He was awarded it once, for his bravery in Vietnam during a mission to rescue a missing soldier in enemy territory.

He was wounded 14 times in Vietnam and was awarded eight Purple Hearts.

Howard will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. No date has been set.

Tsutomu Yamaguch-Double atomic bomb survivor

TOKYO - Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only person officially recognized as a survivor of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings at the end of World War II, has died at age 93.

Yamaguchi died Monday morning of stomach cancer, the mass circulation Mainichi, Asahi and Yomiuri newspapers reported.

"My double radiation exposure is now an official government record. It can tell the younger generation the horrifying history of the atomic bombings even after I die," Yamaguchi was quoted as saying in the Mainichi newspaper last year.

It was interesting how he described the "flash of white light" at the moment the bomb went off. Before even the shock wave, and long before the sound. What an appalling moment it must have been.

As an atomic bomb strike the explosion is unlike anything that had ever been seen before by a public. The idea of a light so searing it burned shadows into walls and such is almost incomprehensible still to this day.

On November 20, 2009, Sandro received a double transplant (heart and lungs) in Mendoza, Argentina. 5 days later, Argentine TV (Cronica TV) reported Sandro was breathing without a respirator. On 4 January 2010, after 45 days of receiving a double cardio-pulmonary transplant, and after many complications, he died of septic shock, mesenteric ischemia and disseminated intravascular coagulation....:(
