I occasionally watched Homicide, though preferred Law & Order; especially Michael Moriarty-a splendid prosecutor.

If you're a distance runner, the name Dick Hoyt may be known to you. Even if you're not, you've likely seen photos of him pushing his wheelchair-bound son in the Boston Marathon. Thirty-two times, to be exact! Age 80,

"The dynamic father-son duo became best known for competing and completing the Boston Marathon 32 times. But there were many other marathons and high endurance events, too, including the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, a competition that involves a 1.2 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile marathon.

"For the ocean swim, Dick literally pulled Rick in a boat via a bungee cord attached to a special vest."

Wow. R. I. P., Dick. You've earned it!

Not sure if anyone here is familiar with the music of Dan Sartain. He was kind of big in the independent music scene, toured the world a few times opening for the likes of Jack White and The Reverend Horton Heat, among others. To me he was just Dan, the kid that used to sneak rum into our smoothies at the Smoothie King he worked at way back when. He'd been going through some hard times recently and took his own life Friday night.

A long standing part of my film and TV history has died. George Segal, whom I first saw in film when my parents took us to see Fun With Dick and Jane which he starred in with Jane Fonda, has died, aged 87:

Always sad to learn of a suicide, and you always wonder what was going on behind those eyes.

I have not seen the film in ages, but I do recall the character if not the name of the actor. Houston Tumlin died by suicide, only 28. Talledega Nights child actor, it was his only credit. Apparently later served in the US Army.

Jessica Walter - a working actor for a full six decades! - died in her sleep last night, aged 80. Walter's first major role came in Clint Eastwood's Play Misty for Me in 1971, and she was best known in recent years for her work on Arrested Development and Archer. Her comic timing will likely be studied for generations.

French Director, scriptwriter & producer, Bertrand Tavernier, has died from pancreatitis aged 79.
I've heard some of his movies are on Netflix so for anyone interested in quality over quantity, it might be worth a looksee.

World renowned American author of children's & young adult fiction, Beverly Cleary has died aged 104.

Beverly Cleary was the first children's author I ever read who actually wrote kids who sounded and acted like actual kids. Ramona was a role model.

Real-life tough guy and unrepentant "Watergate burglar" G. Gordon Liddy, 90. The New York Times refers to him as the "mastermind" behind the "third-rate burglary" that took down President Richard Nixon.

Had a friend (a real character, now deceased as well) who was an FBI agent (after he was a Brooklyn cop who attended Fordham Law School but before he became a practicing attorney) while Liddy was one as well. His assessment: "George [Liddy] is an act-tuh. Ya gotta read that into everything that he does."

That Brooklyn accent had an amusing incarnation because of our mutual interest in the American Civil War. "What did Lincoln say aftah da Union Ahmy won at Vicksburg? 'Da Faddah of Wattahs again flows UNVEXED to da seas!' "

Rather than call Liddy an "actor," I'd refer to him as a "character." I had a personal encounter with him many years ago. I was working for Brooks Brothers when Liddy walked into the store wearing an A2 leather bomber jacket with a "downed American flyer" patch sown on the back. He was not a tall man, but was nevertheless an imposing figure. Certainly a character; he promoted a "larger than life" image all his life.
