Cowboy hats - opinions?

I’m not a Cowboy, but I do like some of their hats. The only problem is that it is kind of hard driving my Prius while wearing one.

If I could find this 1963 limousine/pickup conversion to buy I would go broke trying to get it restored. Can you imagine driving this thing with the cowhide top on Saturday cruise night?

Been around mules, horses, cattle & dogs since I was born.

And I was proud of the '58 Catalina I had in college.

Hi, when I owned cows, I didn't have a cowboy hat. Of course, I was 3 or 4 at the time. My grandfather gave me a cow for my birthday, the cow had a calf, and they went to the auction. I got a few hundred $ which eventually paid for my college. Now, more than 50 years later, I have a cowboy hat, actually like 10 cowboy hats.

Several years ago my wife and I went into a restaurant , I was wearing a cowboy hat. A little 2 year old girl sitting at a table with her grandmother jumped up and said, hey Mister, where's your horse? Her grandmother explained that she had been to a rodeo and thought that everyone that wore a cowboy hat had a horse and she really liked horses. A pleasant memory.

I find little use for a 'cowboy' hat with the brim folded up on the sides. And would agree that particular styling is more costume than utilitarian.

But a wide, flat brim goes a long way in keeping the sun out of your eyes, off your neck, as well as keeping the rain from going down your back collar. I prefer a 4" brim for all of that and find that a fedora does about as much as a radically folded brim cowboy hat when it comes to sun & rain protection...ie: not much. And the fedora, in today's world, is pretty close to as much a costume hat as the cliche cowboy hat. It's all about being fashion stylish and not much more than that.

But a western styled hat doesn't fall into the costume or fashion genre IMHO. It is very functional, sturdy, and can take a days hard work in the elements and come thru ready for another round. And a good one will do that for a lifetime.

Being a native Texan who works land it's the best thing to keep on my head no matter the season, felt or straw, and the bigger the better. My summer hat is a Gus style with a 6" brim. I didn't buy it for the style...I bought it for the brim. And I wear it with a folded bandana around my head to catch the sweat. To an Easterner it may look like a costume but around here it's just every day business as usual head gear.

I ended up with a Sunbody after doing to a Wichita Wranglers baseball game. I knew enough to put sun block on my neck (cause I'm already a redneck), but I didn't do the back of my ears, which flaked off. Now I have cowboy hats.

Oklahoma city has a "famous" hat shop called Shorty's. You can buy any style of hat you want as long as it's the current rodeo taco style. Maybe she can do other styles, but her web pages don't show it. There's a guy in Noble who also does cowboy hats, I might have to give him a try, but I'm out of room in the apartment anyway.

Yes, the severely upturned sides are basically pointless for sun protection. I prefer the style in your avatar, a gradual upturn at the very edge.

Well, I have quite a few true cowboy hats, actually had horses (but no cows) until about 4 years ago. I find I really like the OR hats which are a nice cross between a true cowboy hat and a fedora. I remember quite a few older gentlemen wearing OR type hats when I was growing up in the South. Even here in the Midwest the ORs don't look too "out of place".

Thanks, that's a Doc Holliday from Mike Moore at Buckaroo Hatter's. That's not the one he thinks looks the best though. I have a Black Quigley style that just fits the face. Of course that was pre-19 and I ain't seen my barber since late February 2020. I will try a picture in the next few days (I Hope).

I grew up in Central Illinois, parents were both teachers, Dad's family were railroaders, Mom's were farmers / coal miners. I was a "city slicker" in high school, no cowboy boots or hat, I wasn't a dirt bike type, so no wellington boots either. In college, I wasn't from Chicago, so I'm this giant redneck.
