Cowboy hats - opinions?

I am wondering who made it. It has to be pre-ZIP code, if that is an address on there, but that is hardly "early 20th Century."

A triple XXX and no hatmaker.

A handsome hat, but I would not have bid on it if I was rolling in dough. They'd have to prove to me it was really old and where it came from for that amount of $$$.

I recognize the one in the middle from the National Cowgirl Hall of fame. Her name was Prairie Rose and she could ride and rope and with the best of them.

I've done old west reenacting for over 25 years and there were a variety of hat styles over the years during the time of the cowboy era there are several books with photos from that time period showing hats from civil war kepis to Mexican sombreros, it was more for protection from the sun than a fashion statement. The center dent like in the earlier photos posted on this thread or the "Gus" style from the TV series Lonesome Dove was made popular in the 30's cowboy movies and the "singing" cowboys.

Exactly. I think Tom Mixx made the Gus style popular. I heard he shaped it in the shower--on his head.

Yes, that hat looks closer to the really high hats the early movie cowboys wore (Tom Mix, et al). My Stetson "Gus" has a lot less brim and is a quite a bit lower than that. I couldn't pull that one off.

The weirdest cowboy hat I've seen was the ones Colonel Tim McCoy wore in his western movies. They were much more mountainous than the hat sold on Ebay:

The romance of the American West/Australian outback

The biggest cattle station here is Anna Creek Station, all of 6 million acres (34,000 square km) in South Australia - it's larger than Belgium! The station runs 16,000 head of cattle. Are there Western hats here in Australia - well, you all know it, look at Akubra's huge range of 'outback'-style hats!

It's rural wear here, out under the blazing sun and the worrisome hole in the ozone layer - and the worst drought in a century. The look of the Wranglers or RM Williams moleskins, boots, plaid shirt and western or outback hat to me evoke a feeling of love for my wide brown country, respect for its heritage, and admiration for the tenacity of those who farm the parched earth and toil endlessly against the elements on the driest continent.

RBH, Bob Wills is awesome! Wayne Hancock is something else too, I met him when he toured here a couple of years back and he was not only an outstanding musician but a greta guy to talk to as well.

I have several Akubra hats and love them! I see people wearing the "outback" style hat here (and also in San Diego) more than I do fedoras or even cowboy hats.
