These made it in Friday and I’ve been working on them a bit since then. Some of you might remember when I posted them as “incoming” the heel counter was black like the vamp. Friday I scrubbed them inside and out as I usually do and the surface of the heel counter started getting soft and a bit gummy and the black started peeling off so I switched to a nylon scrub pad and got most of the black off and realized the heel counter was rawhide. I think the foot may have been dyed as well as I saw brown undertones when I cleaned them. I decided to let them dry overnight and researched cleaning rawhide. Yesterday I scrubbed them with a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. After that, I moistened them a number of times with the peroxide, letting them dry in direct sun several times. They cleaned up well but for the stitching and I’m afraid that if I continued to scrub it may break the stitching down. Re dyed the foot and polished them up today.

I figure the age to be late 70’s to 90’s. I really don’t know much about dating Justin’s. I bought my first and only pair in 1976. Those were great boots but after that it was usually TL’s or Nocona’s for OTR boots. The first pic is of where I finished yesterday. Some knucklehead dyed the side seam too. Didn’t clean up well.

I like those green tops a lot, Cuz. I'm no Justin expert either, but short shaft and tall heel, and toe shape especially, make me think early 1950s, although that little triangle patch at the top of the side seam is throwing me off. I've seen plenty of boots from that era with no pull straps but they dont have that little feature. Might be some of their retro line from the early 00s.I can imagine the vamps originally being a nice shade of medium brown to go with that green and red and a rough out heel. Either way, still a nice find. Enjoy them!

I think Justins had cloth labels through the 70's but not sure. I also thought they might be from the Vintage line. I reached out to my contact at Justin about them for you. May take a couple weeks but she'll get back to me with the info.

Thanks, Dale. Could have been a retro run or a special run like TL’s El Rey, I guess. I don’t remember seeing old Justin’s from that era w/o a label. I’ve seen that tab at the top used before to close out the tops w/o inside pulls. No doubt these were made for rough use. Even have a double leather sole.

"The style number shows to be a Cowhide, name “Saddle Latigo” and has a Green Majestic shaft. They were in the Justin line for one year 1.97-1/98."

Thanks, Rob. Good to know. I figured later than sooner. That short run explains why we haven’t seen too many of these around. Olathe is the only factory boot I had seen with with a rawhide counter.I think they still offer one.

One quick flirtation with the notion of a pair of harness voots, and now I'm also looking seriously at cowboy boots as well. This place has a lot for which to answer. Enablers, the lot of you!

Just got these off The Bay. Black Cherry Full Quill Ostrich Lucchese Classics. They wear nice and soft and seem to be in pretty good shape. Not the most practical foot wear for a tropical island, but I like them just fine none the less.

very nice. Great colour. I'm very much intrigued by the look of Ostrich. Much like a gator effect, it has that really nice texture and look to it, more interesting than a plain look, yet somehow less 'fussy' than the stereotypical cowboy boot stitched detailing. I like something like that with a nice strap on it for some buckle detailing.

I actually also rather like the cowboy 'shoes' I see in some places. No idea when they first appeared - eighties, maybe? But they can look great with a quasi-Edwardian, slightly gothic look.

The cowboy boot shoe has been around since at least the 40s or 50s. Like quite a few other things from that era, they had kind of a surge in popularity back in the 80s.

Here is a series of pictures of what I believe is a Tony Lama women's style which is currently being offered for sale on Instagram, username "bootitude." As you can see, the blue is so vibrant, so deep and rich, that it's almost violet! If I could afford it, I'd have somebody like Rocketbuster Boots make me a pair like this in a man's version with needle-point toes and at least a 3-inch, tapered, VERY underslung riding heel! Talk about parade or show boots! WHOAH!!
