I grew up wearing Jacks and Chucks. Jacks only came in white while Chucks came in black and white, high top and low cut. I like the aesthetics but they pale in comparison to today's athletic footwear in terms of performance.

I only saw the Purcell for the first time in the UK about ten or so years ago... not sure whether it had been out of production a while then, or if it was available in the US but not the European market. Nicely designed shoe. In terms of performance.... yes, they were never going to offer what contemporary technology can in terms of an athletic shoe. The Chucks in particular lack arch-support. another case of playing off form against function, I suppose... though that said, I have known several people over the years who took their running very seriously, and a number of them were told by doctors just to stick with whatever shoes they found comfortable, as most of the supposed advancements of modern shoes don't actually offer any perceptible benefits to joints etc. [huh] I tend to avoid sport and related activities whenever possible, so it doesn't much affect me... ;)

I love Purcells, have a plain white pair and an all white ostrich skin pair (probably printed/embossed pattern-but they look interesting). Go great with most outfits and are a design classic. Good enough for Jimmy Dean.

I like the look of Ostrich skin - I'd love a pair of co-respondents with the light colour vamp in that.

Can't say I knew about the Nike-Converse link, but I'm an Insurance Broker so I'm pretty morally corrupt anyway...

lol I didn't know about it for a while either - it can be hard to be aware of everything these days. I think it happened around the time the manufacture of Chuck Taylors (at least the ones I see here in the UK) shifted from the US to China, though I could be wrong as they had already outsourced much of their manufacture of other lines to Vietnam and other places before that.
