Yesterday on the tube, a group of French people talked about my shoes and how President Sarkozy's wife had the same ones :D that made my day, to be given compliments from the French!

At work yesterday this couple were talking to my co-worker about me. I went behind the counter they were at, and the guy said "Yes, we are talking about you! We saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie the other night, and you remind us of those hairstyles... You know, the late 1800's?"

I remember staring in disbelief and sputtering something about WWII... Not sure exactly... I was a little dumbfounded to say the least.

I get mostly positive comments, thankfully (the only negative ones I've received are of the "Indy Jones/private eye/gangster" variety, and I think even those are well-intended, annoying as they can be).

The latest was offered today by a security guard at a construction site I walked past, clad in a vintage grey suit, black wingtips, a lighter grey vintage overcoat, and a charcoal Akubra Sidney/Fedora:

"All men should wear hats like that -- you look so distinguished!"

A couple of recent ones that made me laugh --

While greeting patrons at work the other night, a younger woman told me I looked like "Dita's mother."

Today at the bank, with no makeup and my hair up in a rag, somebody asked me if I was "an old Pentecostal lady."

That has to rank as the widest gamut of remarks I've ever gotten...

Today while out shopping a guy running across the street SCREAMED at me "Your hair is Flipping AWESOME!" and signaled some "thumbs up"

lol. It was just some faux bangs with victory rolls, but that guy loved it.

Petting in Public

I just went out Saturday night with a group of vintage folks (great time) and wearing my fur stole - lots of positive compliments, one pair of men who were taken aback at 2 of us girls coming down the stairs in vintage that they stopped in their tracks - haha.

The most interesting was a 30-ish gentleman who came up to compliment me on my fur and actually *petted* it!! I'm still not sure what I think of that...

This makes me pause for wearing any fur out. I'm very much personal space person. I think if someone were to pet me, I'd flip out. I still want a "new" stole though...

I've had many a stoles and collars petted. There's just no stopping some people (men primarily). I've commented back "Do you think that is appropriate to go up to a stranger and pet them? Most people ask permission even when it's someone's dog. I've been known to bite you know."

I was at the supermarket yesterday and I woman commented on my Enid Collins bag. She wanted to know if it was new, custom made, did I do it my self, etc. So I told her a little about it and she asked if she could take a photo of it. I thanked her for asking first and not just snapping off photo's as is the most common way.

Was it the beer or me?

I finally managed to do a full pin curl set and while Rita's waves weren't quite there (my hair takes curl really well), it was still very 40s. I was wearing a vintagey dress and a wrap, my first time out with definitely vintage hair. I got movie star from a couple of people and one friend said I looked like Katherine Hepburn. (She got a big hug for that.)

The really fun one was the fellow that followed me out the door of the cafe I was in. I held it open for him and as he was going out, he looked at me and said, "You are so frickin beautiful!" I am much better at taking compliments than I ever used to be, so I smiled and said,"Thank you." So, was it the case of Pabst Blue Ribbon he was carrying (and had obviously made a significant dent in) or was it the hair? lol

Still, drunk or not, he certainly wouldn't have said anything with my normal hair. What a difference a hairstyle makes.

On the plane coming home from England, as soon as I stepped on the plane, the steward asked me "Are you a Marilyn fan?" I said "She's alright, but I really like Jean Harlow!"

He then went on to say "Didn't she die really young? Wasn't she only 26?" Me: "Yes, 26 on 1937!"
