Sorry to continue off topic - guess I'm just chatty today. Agreed, but it doesn't have to be a slander thread, or rather, *shouldn't* be a slander thread. There are interesting topics about portrayal of characters in pre-code films alluding to same gender relationships ("Footlight Parade" and "Wings"), and some documented bacchanalia of silent screen stars. It's got the potential to be an interesting thread, but also has the potential to go to H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks in a Hand Basket.

My dad told me that the first time he was even aware that there was a such thing as gays was when he was told that Jim Nabors and Rock Hudson were a couple. This was back in the 1960s.

I think it'd be an interesting subject but there's a lot of 'political' misinformation out there. Flynn gay, Cary Grant gay... Not a shred of evidence for either ascertain. I would have no problem if it were true but I really loathe the twisting of facts. Particularly when it concerns dead people who can't answer back.

I think that started when Rock Hudson died and his sexuality became known. It was meant to be a joke, as if they were married he would be "Rock Pyle". Jim Nabors while he did not have children was not gay

"There appears to be a couple of elderly, or middle aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach ... who every year give a party, a big party, 500 people or so. ... Its an engraved invitation, and to make it amusing they will say 'You are cordially invited to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in Huntington Beach.' One year the invitation was, 'You are cordially invited to the wedding reception of Rock Hudson and Jim Nabors.' And it went all over the country."

Well, it's always rumors, and I was certain it wasn't true, as you don't hear anything about it now. It was just an example of how little you heard about such things 40-50 years or more ago, because it was 'improper'.

'Light in his loafers' - that's a belting turn of phrase! Love it! My nana used to say he was 'a wee bit lavender'! I think they knew, but it wasn't really alluded too much. A bit like my great-uncle who was a 'confirmed bachelor'!

Faygeleh, my elderly relatives would say. Not very harshly, though. Just as a descriptor. Or sometimes just "he's very pretty."

They definitely knew.

I don't think of that as a bad comment. I wish I could have gotten that. She's very beautiful and so are you! Don't be so hard on yourself! When I was in High School, there was a really nice guy that used to say that I looked a lot like Winnie Cooper from the Wonder Years. Hmmm...not sure about that one. Then many years later, my best friend became convinced that I look like Louise Brooks! lol Personally, I think she was a lot more beautiful than I am. See, that's why I prefer to see a beautiful man (David Manners) in my icon picture. I can stare at that man's face all day, rather than my goofy looking face! lol

I love to wear red lipstick and I have wavy hair in a long middy cut (but never actually styled, too lazy, so I usually pull it back with combs on each side). I've lost count of how many people have told me I really suit the vintage look, or I look like a real "English rose" -- and questioning has revealed that they mean I look like I'm from England in the 1940s. It's amazing what a bit of red lipstick and wavy hair can do as far as making people see vintage where there is none.

I get that too sometimes. Even when I am not wearing vintage, people will tell me I have that "vintage look and feel" (mostly my friends). I take it as a compliment. It's always nice to say something nice. Plus, saying that you look vintage could also imply that you look classic. I've seen some people that look like they just rolled out of bed. The PJ pants do not help this either. I hate this look! Errrrr!!!!

I remember this one time I was eating at a restaurant with my family. I was wearing one of my vintage hats (sometimes I forget I have it on!) and this lady went out of her way to compliment my hat. She was really excited about it. It kind of threw me off. In fact, almost any hat I have ever worn has gotten a look or compliment and usually started a conversation. I don't mind this at all because I like to talk to people and listen to them. You learn a lot from talking to people. Plus, it makes you feel special. Sometimes, it doesn't take much to get people really excited about something, especially vintage.

I agree! One time I was wearing my favourite Vivien of Holloway dress in a restaurant, and a group of women came over and started raving about how cool they thought I looked. Put a big smile on my face for sure

ps. Thanks ZombieGirl and Deco Doll for the compliments! Kat is lovely, but I don't have a similar face or nearly as many tattoos as her, so I found the comment funny.
