Bunny, what a lucky duck you are...

I am just getting into vintage, but have dressed what I would call vintage-inspired for a long time. Hey, I live in No. California and still wear hosiery (now stockings)! I'm a radical...:)

Sounds like you've got the the perfect job for how you like to dress. Shades of the office ladies in "Funny Face"! Maybe I should look for a job like yours, as I'm needing for economic reasons to be returning to the workforce very soon.

Out here its too much UGGS and sweatpants with some brand name emblazoned on the butt... and t shirts with ugly stuff on them- AWFUL!!

I love to be dressed up every day if I can, church is a good place for me to do so, as I have choir practice one night, ladies Bible study a different morning and Sunday church all morning. As I'm in the choir on stage for two of our three Sunday services, I'm highly visible. Our family also goes ballroom dancing often (how I met my DH) so I am going to start dressing vintage more there.

Keep up the good work Bunny. You are an inspiration to me who is wanting to do more of the same. I am more interested in the 40's gal look, as that also suits my figure type. BTW, the vintage hair look is my biggest challenge/hurdle to work on,

Bunny your hair pic on your avatar is so terrific!

I recently started working in an office for a major women's clothing retailer here in Canada. And I have to say it is so nice to finally work in a place where I can dress up every day and wear my great vintage clothes. The girls I work with are so sweet and always want to know where I bought my stuff. (A lot of them have fashion degrees, so they have a knowlegde of vintage fashion. It's fun to talk to some of them about the golden era!)
One of the girls I work with told me she wished she had the guts to wear what I wear and stand out like I do. I thought it was the nicest compliment!

I don't often get negative reactions to my appearance. The odd stare or two, but I just think it's because in a world where we've accepted baggy sweatpants tucked into UGGS as appropriate "going out clothes" it's sometimes a shock to see someone dressed in a classy put-together outfit.

As I see it, I'm just trying to bring a little beauty and class to the world! :D

my apologies. I'm a newbie and found this thread via a search and responded - just noticed it wasn't an area I should have been in. :)

Bad ones:
"Oh Betty, why are you dressed like a grandmum of some sort?"

"Why is it you always look like that nymph Diana Dors?"

"Really, you have so many modern piercings and tattoo's and your still dressing like Olive Oyl from Popeye"

"You look like Betty Boop minus the curves"

"Step into reality darling,no one acts or dresses this old anymore"

Good ones:
"i just envy your sense of style"

"your hair is always so gorgeous like a piece of art"

"your style is so cute!!"

"how the hell did you do that hair?? its FAB!"

"you look so much like an old film star i had to do a double-take!!"

i get a mix of comments, quite crazy ones some times, but yeah....

no worries Scott, I saw your original post on my email

I think this post should be in a general category (I thought it was) as it can be applicable to what the gents and ladies are wearing anyway, not just tucked in the powder room section...

Most of the time, I wear vintage inspired outfits. They can get confused for simply conservative though, if I don't have time to set my hair.

But tonight, I was wearing a dress to my church dinner dance that is not vintage at all, but I put a roll in my hair and curled it, and wore my red lipstick.
A family friend whispered to my mom, and then my mom said outloud: "Oh yes, she loves looking retro." Later my mom told me that he whispered to her that I had a very retro look and he loves my style, but he didn't want to offend me. Offend me!? I was THRILLED!:D
Another friend told me that I looked like Christina Aguilera...I also took that as a compliment :)

The best comments and the most i get when wearing vintage inspired outfits is that i look so thin (even though im not lol)
The highwaisted capris and skirts just give the affect;)

Oh goodness! So, to answer the question posted to me earlier, no I don't have pictures...but I hopefully will soon!

I went to a family function (not my family, the sig. other's family) this weekend. I dressed in a calf length wool skirt and a short sleeve blouse with modest heels. I had set my hair the night prior, so I was really sporting the 40's vibe. Three people told me I looked like a 1940s movie star (hardly, in my opinion!) but I ended up scoring a small modeling job next week!

A small boutique in town is going to carry the Bettie Page Clothing line (they have a store in Vegas). I know it's more rockabilly, but they want me to model for the line. They are bringing in a hair and makeup specialist...yay! It's very (VERY!) small, I'll be in some of their print advertisements...but I'm very excited. I've never done anything like it. Who wants to take my picture?!?!?

So it pays to dress vintage!!!! ;)

How brilliantly exciting, Daisywilde! And what a great recognition for your "look"! Congratulations - very well deserved. Hope you can post some of the ads here when it's all done - or of the shoot in progress...?

I really hope I get some copies, or at least access to the images. I'd love to have a copy...but maybe I should wait and see what I look like. Who knows...haha.

I am excited...the shoot is scheduled for next Wednesday (the 8th) assuming the photog can make it. I'm mainly excited to get my hair and makeup done in true fashion...yay!

I have always thought so, and in fact there is a co-ed version in the Observation Bar, it is titled "Negative Reactions":

Bartender, can't these be merged?

That's really excellent about the modeling job! Congratulations.
Be sure to tell us where to pick up the catalog or advertisements after they're released. I'd love to see your work in action.

today I was asked at work if I was going for an interview...eeep...

perhap I should dress down a bit so that they don't think i'm looking elsewhere and get fired for it...

Quite the opposite! I am really glad that I dress like this every day so if and when I *do* need to go for an interview, no one will be any the wiser! lol

I get the "wish I had the guts to dress like that" comment all the time. Well guts have nothing to do with it. Even back when I was 16 and had long blonde dreadlocks and two nose piercings I would draw looks from people, but I never dressed with the sole aim of drawing attention to myself or to make a statement (though the latter was definitely *part* of it) ... it's just who I am ... different! Or, if you prefer, weird! lol

I bought my first (in about 15 years) pair of *gasp!* 'normal' jeans a couple of months ago. They're made by 7 For All Mankind and they make my legs and bum look amazing (which I why I bought them) but man, do I feel odd in them ... I feel like everyone must be staring at me as I look funny! Now *they* take guts to wear! See, told you, weird. lol

I think some of the negative commenters actually think they're being funny.
"Step into reality darling,no one acts or dresses this old anymore"
I'd tell that person to step into reality; people wear all sorts of styles today!

While I get rude looks, no one's said anything but I really feel upset on your behalf. I'd place myself above them and not respond. I think their comments can stand by themselves and says a whole lot about the bigotted people who pass rash judgements on others like that. *Ough!* I'm really on a roll now!:rage:

sweatyspaghetti, I don't know how you react in the situations but at least when I was younger and less aware of the natural changes in my facial expressions, I'd often be misunderstood and assumed to be stuck up and having an attitude. Thus, people felt they had a right to be rude and maybe they didn't even consider that I had feelings? Now I sport the irritating perma smile.:D People are probably afraid that I'll bite their heads off.lol
