I caught this movie late last night and had never heard of it before so, I had no expectations going in.
This movie was not great but, it held my interest and had some great costumes. It tells the story of a Japanese-American family living in California from the mid '30s through the second World War.
What I liked about this movie was how it seemed very personal, there is war going on, the family is of course sent to a internment camp but, the movie doesn't cover those events from the outside, since it is this one family we are following, we see things through their eyes, actually through the eyes of a woman who is retelling the story to her daughter. Dennis Quaid is also in this film playing the Irish American husband of a Japanese woman but truthfully, he doesn't add a lot to the film in my opinion. The story isn't really about him so he comes and goes and even if he weren't in the film this would have still been an interesting movie.
On a side note. The clothing in this film was great! The gents all looked very dapper and to my untrained eye, correct. The ladies looked wonderful, the makeup, clothes, accessories, somehow, even in a horrible, dirty camp, they manage to look lovely. This is a watch for a rainy day or late night.
