Cold Cream- Brands and advice!

Awesome! Well, let me know how you get on with it. To me it's like a lighter, more refreshing cold cream- just don't get it in/on your eyes else it will sting ( as I mentioned). I'm guessing that's the menthol and lemon extract!

I also use cold cream in the morning and night, and whenever else I want to remove my makeup. Since it doesn't strip my skin, I can use it as often as I please.

In the morning I remove it gently with cotton strips and in the evening with warm water and a soft wash cloth or cotton strips. And since I've begun using cold cream again, rather than benzoyl peroxide cleanser, I no longer have to use liquid makeup – only rice powder and cover stick when needed. I also quit using moisturizer on my face, except for around my eyes where I use the $1.00 Nivea in the blue tin.

My skin has improved a million times since I quit using dermatological chemicals! And it is also much less sensitive to the sun now that I’m no longer stripping it. I buy the Walgreens brand cold cream in the tub, which is cheaper than Ponds, and just as good. As for witch hazel, I don’t use it, but I’ve been thinking about picking some up to use on my t-zone.

Funny you should mention the Nivea in the blue tin! I think I have been using it for 10 years now and it's worked perfectly! As for witch hazel...I only use it once a week. I think that is enough!

I bought some of the Boots rose cold cream (I thought someone said this was discontinued though??) and gave it a whirl last night. I loved the feeling from the mentyl in it on my skin and it came off really well and left my face feeling refreshed, however I noticed this morning that it seemed to have zapped out any repair I've been making in the corners of my mouth down towards my chin...it was very flaky and dry when I put on my make-up. Has anyone had this problem when using cold cream? I have been normally using straight up baby oil (mineral oil) to take up my make up and been sitting under a hot washcloth to let it steam in, which has helped the dryness immensely, but this seems to be a step backwards even though there is mineral oil in the cold cream. Or is it just my skin reacting to a new product and I need to give it some time to adjust?

On another note, my mother used to keep her cold cream in the refridgerator when we were growing up. Does anyone do this too? I was wondering if it was just a way to add some extra refreshness when going to apply it.

Hey I have a question for you galls, I always use pond's coldcream and I think it is fab, but I found a store where they sell queen Helene's cleansing creme.
Does anyone know if that is a cold cream?? I'm curious about it and I think I like to try it when I'm out of ponds

Retro GI Jane - I use the Boots Original rose cold cream, and I've never had that issue. I wonder if perhaps it was a reaction to one of the ingredients - maybe one of the fragrance oils?

I too keep hearing that the Boots Original products are discontinued, but my Target stores always seem to have them, even if sometimes the stock is thin. I hope they aren't discontinued as I love them!

Hi All I have now read this whole thread -phew ! I've been using witch hazel as a toner twice a day for a few months now and I have to say that I have seen a remarkable improvement in my skin tone - I have very oily skin and did have quite bad acne ( currently on antibiotics for that and using a benzoyl-peroxide cream my doc. gave me) but I've really noticed that even at times when my acne is raging my skin looks much healthier and brighter and the pimples seem smaller since the skin around them is nowhere near as red and aggrivated! But I'm now convinced I need to try a cold cream as well !

Just a quick question - I know that it's been suggested that we antipodean loungers need to get Dove Essentials cleansing creme as this is the equivalent to cold creams but I'm just wondering if anyone has tried this or if anyone knows where you can actually get ponds/boots/jergens or anything else in Australia ( I'm in perth) or even online - most places offer completely ridiculous shipping costs !
Also - I have found the blue nivea in the tin over here - i only seem to be able to find the one made in germany - is this used in the same way as a cold cream and can it be used to cleanse and remove make-up? or is it just used as a moisturiser?

Yes, the refrigeration gives it a "kick" in that it feels nice. I often recommend to customers to refrigerate their eye cream, especially if they're concerned with undereye puffiness. Also, it may keep the product fresher for a longer period of time. Germs typically do not like cold.

OK, I have ventured forth into the unknown... They don't sell cold cream here. I can get Pond's online from the UK, but then it's not really cheap anymore. So... I think I mentioned I always thought Nivea was a cold cream, right? Anyway, it's too sticky to work well for makeup removal, but my skin really liked it when I tried it so I got innovative.

I mixed in olive oil in Nivea (the blue jar, which is all we have here) until it had a nice texture - think mayonnaise - and wow! Makeup comes off really easily and my skin just loves it. I used a smidge after washing (after using tonic) before going to bed too and I can't believe it doesn't make me feel the least bit oily, just soft and smooth. Plus it smells really nice; like a mix of citrus and olive oil.

Best idea ever.

I'm so glad you posted this because I've been dying to try it. I mix olive oil into everything but because I order my Nivea from Germany It's more expensive and hard to get so I was sort of apprehensive to try it. I will give it a go now, thank you for that.

Thanks Flicka ! I'll definitely give that a try ! I guess people could mix in other oils etc. as well if they wanted a different scent - I think rosemary oil and lavender oil are supposed to be really good for soothing irritated skin and I know calendula oil has been discussed on this thread and others before.

I love the feeling of cold cream, but my skin is so sensitive, it usually tends to backfire. I had really bad acne, which has finally cleared up, but is always waiting to take an encore. My skin alternates from super dry to super oily all day.
I tried Boots' rose cold cream (smells sooo good), but it was a bit heavy, maybe since it contains beeswax.
Flicka, I think I'll experiment with Nivea and see what happens.

Nice tip, I think I'll give it a try, It is also not very cheap to buy pond's cold cream over here, but i like it so I just pay it, but the nivea mixture seems a lot cheaper,

So I went out and got the nivea cream today ( on special 300mls for $9 - woohoo!) and mixed it with extra virgin olive oil and a little bit of almond oil. Used it for the first time tonight and my face was a little um...waterproof? if not exactly greasy but I put on some witch hazel after and that fixed it.
So anyway I'll let you know how it goes
Oh also, just so you know I have quite oily skin which is also very pale and freckly ( that's what you get for mixing irish blood with indonesian i guess ! ) and the next week is set to be around 40 degrees celsius each day so anyone looking to see how it holds up in hot/dry weather will soon find out !

I used it again this weekend and after looking at the ingredients, I am sure it is the lye (sodium hydroxide) in it affecting my skin. This time around it made my nose peel a bit but I am getting over a cold too and I feel like my nose is just raw from the overuse on the kleenexes. The redness and tingly feeling did go away in no time, and I am not noticing any flakiness on my nose area today after applying make-up so I might need to continue with a light coat of mineral oil after using the toner in my problem spots and see if that helps. I'm not going to give up yet, I really love the stuff while I'm using it and it just seems to be affecting any spot on my face that is already problematic.

I did stick it in the refridgerator and love the added chillyness on my skin, especially while soaking in the tub!

I'll admit I'm knee deep in snow and what with the heating the inside air is so dry my lips crack when I smile unless I use lip balm. I might feel greasy too in the summer.

Used to have acne but it cleared up after I started sleeping properly a few months ago for the first time in years. I guess it was stress related...

This is very slightly OT, but I have a weird question. I switched to the Jergens the other day because, hey, it's cheaper and comes in a bigger tub. I was slightly disappointed it doesn't smell like their original scent lotion, but now I'm driving myself crazy trying to figure out what it does smell like. It's a very familiar scent, but I can't place it. Anyone have any idea what else uses the same fragrance as Jergens cold cream?

Original Jergens lotion has a cherry almond scent. Hope someone else can help.
