CNN Opinion: Stop hating on the millenials

Call it what you wish, but the scenario described is the textbook definition of "Marxism". The term was brought up not in a pejorative way, but in a scientific context to describe what was being discussed.

I think a lot of countries with social welfare programs would be stunned to find out they are actually a commmunist system. Really stunned.

I love how the minute anyone talks about socialism or the public welfare they are a communist according to some people. And immediately labeled a Marxist. Mainly because they have't read Marx.

I've got a weird feeling that the people who say "why would anyone work if we had a satey net? And why should we have a safety net?"I are the ones who:
1. Are deep down lazy and would prefer not to work if they didn't have to.
2: Would manipulate the system so they wouldn't have to work.
3. Don't believe in charity and don't give anything (time, money) to charity.
4. Are greedy as heck.

Otherwise they wouln't come to the conclusion that "everyone" is this way.

I have tried to be nothing but civil in this discussion, and specifically avoided getting nasty. If I've come across otherwise in my demeanor, I sincerely apologize, it was not my intention. Tone in an online conversations can often be difficult to interpret. And it has nothing to do with men or women. I have enjoyed the discussion, but as is inevitable, we get to a point where we simply differ philosophically. We've come along way from the original premise and wandered onto thin ice. It's probably best to end it here before it actually does get nasty. I'm ashamed to admit that I've had my share of those moments (though typically when discussing baseball rather than socioeconomics). I hope that whatever animosity has built up over this stays here and does not carry over into any other conversations we should have in the future.

That sucks. I'm sorry. Your in-laws should have helped you get out. I was considering moving my family across country for a potential job opportunity, but I thought it might end up in a situation similar to yours... I don't like to live anyplace where it's really expensive and the culture isn't a good fit. I'd rather stay in the sucky economy, the devil you know kind of thing.

But if I am ever out to visit my in-laws I will come and visit and we can meet at your favorite place that serves tea (I don't drink coffee)! And you are welcome to come visit here if you are ever this way! Not much of a consolation prize, but it's something.

I'm not particularly proud of my own generation. The most of us have terrible taste in well, just about everything. I do agree that we've been dealt a horrible hand in the jobs market, and that's why many are 'delaying adulthood.' There are plenty who are just too lazy to go to work, though. That could very well be said of any generation.

As far as Millenials being the worst generation, I would disagree. The pot-smoking Woodstock portion of the Baby Boomers are the worst, in my opinion.

Recently, I had a conversation with a law professor who claimed that 20 and 30 year olds are (more-or-less) victims of an agenda to slow down their progress and hold them back in order to keep the youngsters out of competition with older generations. The Boomers are still in the market in massive numbers, and there's simply no room for millenials right now. Supposedly, this notion is why young people are subliminally taught to be far less self-sufficient than in past generations.

I do love how someone would be "labelled" a Marxist. It's not something to be ashamed of. It's as solid an ideology as any with which to approach existence. what would we have instead? Bloody John Stuart Mill?! and utilitarianism to the n'th degree?
