I don't know about other languages, but in English corn cobs are regularly referred to as "an ear of corn". Apparently, in this context, the word "ear" comes from the ancient word "ahs" which meant "husk of corn".

Well, thanks for the edumacation! I always assumed it was because they hung off the stalk like an ear.
