Clarification about closing threads

Since I'm mostly new here, can the mods explain the reasoning behind closing threads?

I'm not trying to be confrontational here, I'm just unclear. Every other forum I've been on the mod will post the reason for closing the thread right before they lock it.

I'm asking this here rather than in general discussion as the mods there might be different.

Again, not wanting to be confrontational, I did read through the stickies, there just seems to be a reason for locking threads here and I'd like to understand it in case I'm going against a rule repeatedly that I'm not aware of. One bad thing I can see about locking the Aero thread of mine is that Aero can't reply to it with their own viewpoint when they come back from vacation.
