Chicken Grease....

I was at a friends house tonight and the knucklehead picked up my vintage Knox. Of course he had been eating chicken and didn't clean his hands and I now have some grease stains on the brim and at the pinch of my lid.

Any idea how I can get this out?

I feel homicide coming on.....

Other than the results of homicide being soo permenant, I'd send it to a hat shop that cleans and refurbs hats. But homicide is appealling :) Have you changed friends ? :)

I would much prefer a home remedy if possible.

Yeah I have, he know knows what I think of him and his entire family tree.

Cornstarch might help absorb the grease. And maybe it won't, but I doubt it will hurt it any. Sprinkle some (dry) on the greasy spots and leave it for a bit.

Starch is worth a try. I think that naphtha (augmented perhaps with a little scrubbing with a soft brush) should remove it. Soap and water may not be a bad idea either.

In a panic I did some naptha spot treatment. It appears to have gotten the stuff out of the crown, but not the overwelt brim. When I get home from work tomorrow, I will do a more extensive cleaning.

Good news. Don't panic ... I'm sure it will come out, especially since it's fresh and not the result of years of ground in grease and dirt.

The danger with almost any spot treatment is that it might leave "spots." You know, little rings where the treatment was applied. That's why I'd try a dry cornstarch first, as it's less likely to leave evidence of itself behind.

Here's hoping it all "works out."

Yes indeed. Always try the less severe options first. In those cases where spot cleaning with a solvent works but pushes some dirt to the edge of the solvent boundary, several of us have found that a little talc (or similar) will remove the rings. Buler did a photo presentation on this a while back.

However you slice it, I'm confident that you will find the right solution for your particular problem.

I'd quit doing anything else that could make things worse. If you love the hat, send it to a professional cleaner.

I think taking a bat to it will make you feel better.... not sure how you can help the hat, though.

I think I agree that a pro cleaner is the best medicine, at this point.

I have misread the title as "chicken crease" and wondered in to see what it looked like.

That would be...

I've learned the hard way to seek out the pros for stains. Not only for hats but any textile of value.

At first I was thinking a hat sponge with a light amount of dish soap (as it cuts grease to some degree) may work? Or maybe the powder scout hat cleaner, but really the other individuals that are more seasoned (no pun intended on this) have stated it best, pro hat cleaner. If not, you may just keep trading off one type of stain or residue for the next for each thing you would attempt to do.

Sorry your friend was so "brain dead" to have messed up your hat.

I had a friend pick up one of my hats smashing the crown as he did so. Lucky for me his hands didn't leave a stain.
