I don't think Eastmans jackets are flashy/gaudy enough for the Chinese nouveau riche. They are made with WW2 era technology- China has only just climbed out of that industrial level. It's too early for them to get 'retro' and nostalgic about it I think. Most of the rich Chinese I know (not that I know a lot) want modern and big designer names.

Absolutely agree on this. If they are going to spend a grand on some jackets, they will probably go for Burberry, Belstaff, Prada or Gucci. I think until Eastman start stamping huge ELC logos on the chest of all their jackets, very few mainland Chinese would rush to buy their jackets.

Good looking site, I Just agonize over the prices so I Just avoid browsing it. I would have to earn one of these Jackets with a Lot of hard work.

PS:

where is all the information and write-up about the Jacket themselves!!!

That was something I dont see now and really think is important for customers.

But hey, Eastman only makes jackets for tiny guys, so they should go ahead and knock themselves out.

I have been travelling to China every year for over a decade. I can assure you the nouveau rich have only one consideration when they shop. Highest price is best price as far as they are concerned. And foreign brand the better. Best way to get your brand noticed by the well oiled is to charge ridiculous prices.

If you lined up 10 guys with A-2's that cost from $100 to $2000, and had those guys stand in a line, 99% of the public would not know the difference. If that effects your decisions at buying time then don't spend as much. If you know and care, then buy what makes you happy...

That's very true and true also of all collectors with a special interest, from those who collect Star Trek costumes to those who shell out for World War One memorabilia. Generally only other enthusiasts get it. People on this site often buy with a select and appreciative audience in mind - aficionados like those who post here. So much more gratifying than mass appeal.

We have to hope that nobody open up the flood gate of our repro jackets there. The Japanese are already paying silly amount of money for a lot of stuffs already. I recently bought an Inverallan wool cardigan from a UK vendor and found out that the Japanese are paying two times the price over there....

Yeah, maybe. But I think it's just not conspicuous enough consumption for the rich Chinese- there's way too much risk that the 'ordinary' people don't know what they're looking at, and wouldn't know the difference between a cheap Irvin style jacket knock-off, and an ELC Irvin.
