Hi

I’m not sure why American’s expect Europe to understand us. Our ancestors were kicked out of every decent country in the world (and some not so decent). We’re the British that didn’t trust the King because he wouldn’t let us be Puritans. We’re the French who didn’t want to be Catholics. We’re the Irish and German Peasants who didn’t like staving. We’re the Africans who got stuffed into a boat and brought here whether we wanted to or not. We’re just NOT the trusting sorts. After that start would you expect us to be? We don’t trust each other all that much, and we certainly don’t trust anyone who can take away everything we own on a whim (like a government, ours or yours).

To quote Bill Murray's character from the movie Stripes:
“We're Americans, with a capital 'A', huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts!”

The way this thread has gone on and on for six pages while accomplishing absolutely nothing and stirring up all sorts of ill feeling on both sides of the ocean is the best testimony yet to why we don't want such discussions on the Lounge. Think about it.

As for guns, I own one. I have my reasons for owning one, I owe nobody an explanation for it outside of the proper authorites, and have no interest whatsoever in any other person's opinion of my decision to own one. It's between me, myself, and I, and nobody else. Period. I have no interest in discussing the topic here, so I don't.

And while I have only the barest knowledge of what "Nascar" is, I love Cheez Whiz. Melt it, add some cayenne pepper, and pour it on a steak sandwich, and that's some good eatin'.

My thoughts..exactly!

Absolutely right; nor should we. "Trust no one, my friend, no one. Not your most grateful freedman. Not your most intimate friend. Not your dearest child. Not the wife of your bosom. Trust no one." Good fences make good neighbors. In God we trust; all others, cash.

If I am the only person in here who wonders about this, I'll just leave.
If I am not - I think this forum and it's bartenders needs to explain themselves.

Thank you.

You are definitely not alone. There seem to be some subjects and/or opinions that will get censored into oblivion without further ado - which has been troubling me for some time now, especially with regard to what subjects get censored. It's actually rather telling (screaming out loud!) to see what is obviously considered unfit for public discussion by moderators (and I'm NOT referring to political topics here or discussions about firearms) - which in itself becomes a political statement. Sad but oh so very true.

All the best people love Cheez Whiz. And don't try to claim you don't eat things equally bizarre in Europe. I've seen British snack food.

Another thing we could do without, as long as people are venting, is dramatic announcements from people who have decided, for whatever reason, to leave the Lounge. Especially when they come back a few months later under another name and think we don't know it.

Darn it all to hell, you just ruined my plans for the weekend... and the next several months. Sigh. ;) Now I have to find something else to do.

...But, I must stress, I suspect many of the European loungers are shocked by the defensive attitude to a point that I don't really have much of an opinion on...

And you know, I don't blame you, or anyone across the pond. In fact, the reason you don't understand why some folks get defensive is precisely the same reason this thread was started. Americans are a strange brew, and we're sometimes at odds with one another.

In the US, gun owners often become quite defensive because the daily news - in every corner of the country, whether it's local, regional or national - can paint gun enthusiasts as sadists, maniacs, paranoid fools, animal haters, criminals, militia-forming-whackos, and on and on until you just feel totally beat down for your hobby. It's like people liking fur coats - in the US, it's almost a hushed discussion because the minute you go public about fur, you're labeled a fox murdering sadist elite. It's ridiculous, but there you have it.

Thus, when guns are brought up in any other sense besides their pleasant mechanical functions, tempers in the US flare - even between gun owners.

Imagine a well-intentioned American questioning why the Britons don't just drive out the Monarchy in favor of a capitalist president. The American could be trying to discuss better economic policies and be totally oblivious of the political and personal landmines involved.

And that's why it's best to avoid such discussions entirely on forums such as this. In all the history of the Internet, I would be very much surprised if there was ever a single person whose opinion was swayed one way or another by a debate of this topic on a discussion forum, so why bother to even try? This is why we banned the fur debate from the PR, and that's why we ought to ban the gun debate as well.
