I just won a hat on You Know Where. Right up until the end I was the ONLY bidder. At the last minute, literally, I was outbid. So, I timed, guessed well and, with 2 seconds left, won the hat!

Hey, I take my losses, the many of them, well. I don't begrudge those who are A) Willing to go higher than I am OR B) Outbid me at the finish line.

Now, I go back to You Know Where and there's a message, via the internal messaging system, waiting for me - from the other bidder. One word - d***head.

Maybe I'm being a little...picky. But, COME ON! Take your loss and move on! Right?

Tell him where to go, also tell him if he's going to snipe somebody to do it right.
I've been sniped lots of times, and I've been POed about it too. But I'd never send the winner a nasty message. I bet he's a newbie and doesn't know how the game is played.
You could also report him to e-bay (forward his message).
Bob.

I totally agree, the guy should just move on, yes there are jerks too, out in auctionland. I sometime use a bid system that will do it for me and I know some do not like it, but I do not always remember and if I win, fine, but don't be a jerk about it if you lose.

That's nutty! If you ever sell, add numpty to your blocked bidder list immediately.

Then send him a note that says, "d***head? No, HAThead. Nyah!"

Gee that sucks........there are poor losers everywhere.......at least you won the item, and I hope it is everything you hoped it would be.

I agree.....use a sniper program......we use bidnip and have never lost (except when our bid was too low).......hang in there and next time some jerk sends you that type of message, just tell him to "go pound sand".

Ridiculous show of immaturity on the part of the LOSER. Consider the source.
I know it stings to get outbid at the last second, but there will always be other auctions in the future. If I "lose" one now, no matter really,.... maybe a better deal is waiting for me? It's happened to me lots of times. :)
Edit: Maybe you should notify "you know where" about this idiot?

I got an extremely rude email from the WINNER of an auction.

I reported them, and than put them on my blocked list since I sold stuff at that time too. :)

I've also praised winners, and sometimes made nice new friends.

Thanks for the support and advice, kids. I did reply -

Hey, I was the FIRST bidder and the LAST bidder. If you wanted it
that much, you should have bid more.

And if you email me again with an insult, I'll have Ebay all over you
like the cheap suit that a classless bum like you must wear. As a matter of fact, here's a link to another one...[insert link here]

Not as creative as I usually can be. But sufficent to the occasion.

Does "that place" allow images to be sent via their messaging system? If so, once you get the hat, send him a photo with you wearing it captioned, "How do you like MY new hat?"

Or, you could send him a photo of your backside.

Hummm, that's not cool... if it were I, I'd probably reply to him with some snarky remark... Maybe say: Surely you could do better then that! Or, reply: no one likes a spoiled sport! lol

Most of all, let it roll off your back... no time to waste with sore losers!;)

Yeah, sniping is just a part of ebay. Personally, I find it exciting even if Im the one getting sniped against. All a part of the thrill of the hunt.

If this guy was so emotionally invested in the item that he felt compelled to send you that message, then he should have bid higher.

That reminds of someone who mentioned how he made his highest bid but someone had already outbid him so he bailed on the auction. The guy who outbid him, who had made one maximum bid was pizzed that he didn't get the item for like the openig bid and accused the guy of being a red herring in cahoots with the seller.

Yes, some dingus was ticked not becuase he didn't win but was forced to pay more, though not more than his original max bid!!!

I do this all the time. I have a max amount in mind. I bid once. If I get outbid a day or a second before the end of the auction I don't care since maximum means maximum.

I was wanting 2 vintage items for my 1950 Packard lately, a canvas desert water bag like they used in the 50s and a vintage compass. I patiently kept bidding as auctions began and items kept coming. I refrained from overbidding past my max and lost several. But I kept bidding as things came up and in 3 weeks I'd won both items well below my max bid.

Patience is the key to Ebay. I'll see an item get bid way beyond it value and the next week a duplicate item goes for the opening bid. Go figure.[huh]

Or he should have waited longer to bid. Putting your snipe in with a minute to go is just asking to get sniped back. I've been sniped at the very last second, it's how you learn. I would never use a sniping service because the waiting and the last second bidding is what makes it fun.
BTW. I always use Google and the completed auction search feature to see what an item is worth. I've seen folks bid more then what they could buy the item new for.

I hope that wasn't another Lounger. Those of us with larger hat sizes are often bidding against one another as Mr.Lucky and I know. We even PM about it. :)

It's the thrill of the hunt and you may come up with a good trade or two in the future based on knowing where a particular item is located.

The disgruntled bidder needs to "get a life". For pete's sake, it's only a hat. ;)

The other bidder sounds like a complete prat.

Anyway he was trying to be a smartarse and pip you at the post but you pipped him instead. Classic case of beating him (or her) at his own game.

I bid on eBay in one of two ways. Either I'll put on a max bid and leave it at that (I once won a pair of really nice sneakers for a penny - put the bid on ano reserve auction just to watch it back in the day when you could only watch 20 items in your ebay account at a time, and noone else bid. Seller was courtesy personified and never once complained), or I use a sniper program if it's a higher value item that I really want and want to put my max bid in as close as possible to the end, the idea being that if I do that it's less likely to get pushed up by competing bidders. It can be annoying to be outbid by someone who beats you by pence, but then you have to remember their ceiling might have been way higher than the margin they won by. The sniper program I use is Auction Stealer - I only use the free version, which posts the bid 15 seconds before the end. Often I get beaten but it has always been because I have been pre-outbid, i.e. someone else was prepared to pay more than me. at one time I considered this software underhand, but it's not forbidden by eBay, and after losing out to snipers once too often, I decided it was fair game. It simply isn't practical for me to sit at the computer and wait to snipe manually - not least as I bid on a lot of US auctions!

A lot of people do emotionally invest in eBay - "this is my item, and I will beat you!" - those tend to be the folks that get nasty if they lose. Fortunately I've never been hassled by any of them, though I know it happens. If I did, I would immediately report them to eBay without responding directly myself. People only do that sort of thing because they get away with it (and because they're immature idiots).

I find this can happen at live in person auctions, not just ebay. I know I have been guilty of getting caught up in a bidding war and paying more than I would have liked for something at a estate auction once. Of course, occasionally the way those auctions are run, you're not exactly sure what amount you're even bidding. I've never been hassled for a auction item at any auction however, virtual or real, and hopefully never will. But perhaps I can guard myself better to it now that I know it does go on out there.
