Edward- that hits it on the head. There are people who will spend whatever it takes to obtain an item regardless of the value. I see this all the time in vintage auto items. What you said about not knowing what some schmoo has for a max bid lets you shrug when they win. I've watched some things that continued after I maxed out at $21 go for over $50 when the average daily selling value is $30.
And the weird thing is I'll see the same jamoke bidding on several identical items. They win one and keep bidding on other auctions like they're attempting to corner the market on some particular esoteric item. I don't get that. Are they planning to one day whip out and begin selling widgets at some anticipate dhigher price than they paid?
If you've ever seen those utterly stupid Jackson- Barrett car auctions on cable you'll know that there are a bunch of schlubs that have amassed huge fortunes and will pay $100,000 for nice Mustang they could buy for $20,000 anywhere except they're bidding against another rich a-hole with money to burn.
