I must admit to being a fan of the Montgomery-Burns-esque "Ahoy hoy!" when it is someone I don't know, or "What ho *name/nickname*" for someone I do

That is a standard between Root, some of the vintage crowd and I at times... It's just old school.

Comes from when the phone was invented and the only thing they had reference to in the way of phones were the tubes used to communicate to the engine room on ships... so early callers said "ahoy".

I use names when I answer my cell phone...if I answer it. If it doesn't identify on caller ID, I don't pick up...they can leave a message. I used to feel bad about that kind of attitude, but now I think that if I carry an electronic leash it has to be on MY terms only.

We're all so authentic in our vintage lifestyles..caller id...cell phones...:)

I used to have an answering message that would throw people off that went something like this:

Hello?
(pause)
Hello?
(pause)
HELLOOOOOOO? Is anybody there?
Well, I'm not, but if you'll leave a message I'll get back to as soon as possible.

It was funny how many friends would leave messages that they really thought it was me and then a week later, the same message would stump them again.

I think I'm changing my message!

Yes, some people have a message like that. It's probably much more fun if you start the recording right away, not only at the beep, as some machines allow you to. You'd have all the laughs and/or curses then. I don't do that, though - I'd feel bad to record people that feel unobserved.
