If it were me I would go for the Buzz or Mash shirt's which are much more authentic to what was actually worn. Anything McQueen wore in a military film would of had McQueen's own spin and tastes applied to it. I'm sure the Eastman/ John Lofgren is a fine shirt, produced to the highest quality. Unless I'm very wrong I'm not sure a sailor in the 1920s would have worn such a light blue colour, faded or not? This seems to be post war. But as a recreation of what was worn in the film I've no doubt it's outstanding. But I suspect what McQueen wears in this film was a recent issue shirt of the mid 60s.

I think you are referring to the chainstitch runoff. I think it's just to show off the fact that they are using a chainstitching machine because pretty much every brand that makes 'denim-style' or 'heritage/work wear' clothing does this.

I own chambrays by Freewheelers, Buzz, Momotaro, Big Yank/Warehouse, Journal Standard Homestead, and several others (another example of wasteful purchasing). My favorite of the group is definitely the Freewheelers chambray. The fabric is fantastic. I also really like the Momotaro. The Buzz is well made, but kinda boring.

I had a Buzz navy chambray many years ago. It is decent and you can't go wrong for the price. On the contrary I had a Buzz sweatshirt around the same time which was very disappointing quality. My current favorites for chambray are At Last Co. and Belafonte.

I find Belafonte's chambray shirts really appealing indeed! However the price is way out of my range right now...

Same for me. Freewheelers takes first and Momotaro is in second. My absolute favorite chambrays are my Masterson's ones made from Huston Mills fabric, but those are not available anymore unfortunately.

No experience with the ATF chambray but with its navy shawl collar denim. I just couldn't bear with the quality of the Chinese denim. Try MASH instead? I contacted them and they say that the shirt is completely made in Japan, including the fabric.

Like others said, it's expensive but the 100 GBP shirt would last you a long time and you'd love it more as it ages.

Meh...ATF has crazy shipping prices, weird sizing, and the quality didn't seem THAT good. Eastman is waaay out of my budget, and MASH would have ended up being just as expensive after taxes. So I found a nice Levi's chambray on ebay instead. Is it a repro USN chambray? No. It is more or less the same style though, fairly good quality, good fit too:

Was thinking of starting a new thread but found this one and decided to ask here even though this thread is couple years old: who makes the best WWII type Chambray shirt at the moment? I just had Buzz Rickson's one and while it fitted me quite well, I did find the sleeves and hem length very short and decided to sell it. The real 40's USN one had very long length. I think BR makes them shorter so it's easy to wear untucked for those who wish to do so. The chambray fabric and shape of collar was very good on BR though.

Anyone got experience with the here previously mentioned MASH Chambray?

It looks good and there is a comparison between original and their repro on the product page too. I emailed MASH and the shirt is completely made in Japan, based on the WWII USN shirt.
But I just wish I could find pictures of someone actually wearing the shirt to see the fit and so on.
