Buying a hat in Italy

I`m going to Italy in October I`ll be going to Rome,Sorrento,Taormina,Vellta,Malta,Florcence,Elba Italy.

Does anyone know where in any of these citys where I can buy a Fedora?
any help would be great,

In Rome their are a couple of vintage shops on Via del Governo Vecchio with a lot of great hats. You have to have a pretty small head, and they are not cheap, but there are some really nice hats there.

I don't know where they are, but I know of www.rmr-hats.com; and http://www.cappelleriamelegari.com. On the latter I corresponded with Sergia Azani, who was very helpful.

If you go onto the Borsalino website www.borsalino.com , they list all of their stores.
I am sure that there are independent hat stores there as well. Rome is a big city!

There are some decent new hats at a stall in the market by San Giovanni. It is open before 2pm every day except Sunday. Just go to the San Giovanni metro stop, and look for the market, it is really obvious. The hat shop is pretty far back into the maze though. It is not the best, but it is rather good.

Isn't it odd that we Philistines from America are the ones demanding Italian hats in Italy. Ha!

Here in the states, from what I can tell, theres much focus on either ballcaps or the occasional straw.

Well from what I hear all though I have never been most of Europe doesnt wear baseball caps and is generally more formal

The only "insight" I can offer, is that I didn't see many hats when Conan did his show there.

I’d advise to wear what you like and are comfortable in. While there is nothing wrong with the “when in Rome...” philosophy, there is also nothing wrong with maintaining your sartorial preferences when traveling. I would say to leave the baseball caps at home but that has more to do with my being a hat snob and my own unfair associations. Hats in most part of Europe are not all that common these days.

I would make a point of making some local acquisitions and hope to stumble on cheap vintage Borsalinos etc.

Went to Rome last year, but it's not haven of hats by any means. There is the occasional panama, but that's about it. I did pick up a few vintage hats there but I only managed to find one shop selling them. There is a great hat-shop just off the Piazza Navona though. This one:

I was in this Hat store and was so exited when I happen to find it but that excitement was quickly over when I saw the prices.
Hat wearing in Italy is the same as here at home, the odd old timer and guys like us.
But I did buy a nice straw hat in Positano and wore it every day and got a lot of compliments.

+1. And baseball hats were mostly seen on tourists. I was there a few weeks ago and traveled with an old Champ Featherweight. It served me well.
