Brim Curls: Kettles, Pencill, etc.

Well, I have little knowledge of this myself, but maybe if we make enough questionable assertions here, someone will be annoyed enough to offer some specifics.
My Beaver homburg, by the way, has a much more pronounced Western curl. With that as my basis for comparison, I would have said the Miller Winston is more of a European style.

Oh, and do you have a picture somewhere of the Beaver homburg (Beaver Brand or made of beaver?)? It sounds pretty interesting!

That is one handsome homburg! I like the wide, wide binding on the clean curl, too .

I've a question, now that I've seen a few examples of homburgs: is the binding usually put in the hat after the brim has been curled? I can't tell if the binding is all the way around or only on the outside edge of the curl, but it seems to me like it would be a difficult and time consuming process.

This is late 1950s Stetson made by Mayser.

Wegener (Germany) probably mid 1950s maybe earlier.

Wegener probably 1980s or 1990s. Not bad for a modern one.

Wegener from the early 1960s. This one can be snapped so not really later Homburg like.

This C. W. N. (Germany) is probably early 1900s. In the US it would be considered a Fedora - Alpine in that time period. The brim is soft but curled with a shorter tapered crown.

Yes, I agree about the beads. I wonder if they were implying this treatment might have been added or personalized by the hat owners themselves? Here's a better view. I like the overall shape, brim curl, and of course the fact it is an Akubra, my favorite affordable, production hat.

I have bunch but this late 19th very early 20th Century G. M. Melone is standout.

That is the most incredible & tightest brim curl I've ever seen! Wow!

For my Homburg I will submit this dark blue Hückel Superior.

After looking at all these, I guess I prefer the 'western' style of homburg brim curl, if that means a slightly dipping brim front and rear. I also like side dents closer to the front of the hat, like a fedora pinch, just not tight. Of all the homburgs Ive seen so far, the shape of the Miller 1376 appeals to me the most.

Personally, I dont have a preference for modern or vintage hats. I just have to like the particular hat.

Yes no binding. The original Homburgs (late 19th Century) didn't have binding but this one is from the 1930s so not as common for that time period. The brim has a typical later day curl but not stiff or Bowler like.
