Thanks, Vladimir! Just curious, is this actually written anywhere, or is it just something that's been handed down through the generations?

Both, really. I am sure that the better mens style books (the ones written by Flusser, Boyer, etc) have it written down somewhere or other, but they didn't invent the rule. It is simply a tradition among those who know how to dress well.
