RIDING DERBY

Matt Deckard's bowler avatar--O.P.--Tony in Tarzana--
It just arrived, won it for the opening bid on eBay. It's harder than my Shoei motorcycle helmet, a bit musty, and has a hole in the back of the brim where someone must have nailed it to a wall (probably in order to bomb-proof the wall... this thing is HARD!)

Tony,

The hole in the back was where a cord (wind trolley) attached

so not to lose your deby while riding a horse. The small bowler my daughter is wearing in my avatar is a riding derby .

Really? The hole isn't neat, though, it's rough and ugly. Maybe you're right and it flew off a couple of times. If so, I hope it didn't hit anybody, as it could do some serious damage.

In WWII it probably saw service as an air raid shelter. lol

Durable goods

Yeah, thats why i bought one for my daughter indestructible.

I'll post some photos soon of the back. There is a gromit with swivel that

the cord attaches to. The cord has a safety clip at both ends so it is

detachable from the hat.

The Bowlers made in the Victorian Age were stiff as a board. You have to remember that bowler was created as a hard hat to protect the gameskeepers' heads from low lying branches while they chased poachers. The Earl of Coke commissioned the hat to be so stiff that you could stand on it. I wouldn't suggest anyone try it though. ;)
So if it is as hard as a helmet I would not be surprised at all. :D

Regards,

J

Oh, and don't get me wrong, I love my bowler!

Here's the little label that was inside the sweatband. The hat must have shrunk a wee bit over the years, as a British 7-3/8 should fit a bit loosely, as it's roughly equivalent to an American 7-1/2. The hat is actually a bit snug.

As always, click the thumbnail for the larger image:
