I am laid off until about December 15 when the next conventions set up begins (CES Consumer Electronics Show), and I believe thats the start up of the next group of conventions....wont have a new convention calender until December, but it will keep me busy into 2008 anyway, its a long setup. Bunches of elcectric in that one. (eh, plasma screens, I hate plasmas!!!!) I have only been off work for less than a week from the previous bunch of shows and am already bored to tears.

Anywho, what does everyone here do when they have extra time to kill on their hands? I am already on the look out for Red Devil lye, but it seems like no one carrys it any more, I was going to start making batches of soap again. I've also started back on other things I've given up on doing years ago, drawing and the like. But was interested in what other people do when they had "vacations" when they didn't actually leave town and were just at home, or sick time, etc. Just time on their hands and have started to go nuts.

Thanks

Well you can flirt and/or fight with me here on FL. I got home last weekend, and don't plan on going out on the road again until mid-January.

I was laid off a few years ago and going a bit nuts with the sudden free time, so I decided to learn a new instrument--guitar. (I already played several others). I credit it for keeping me sane through a really bad period of life (there was a hospital stint in there, too) and helping with the recovery. It's now my favorite instrument.

I also like to write, particularly short stories.

I found I needed to do things that kept me going, thinking, engaged. I defintely didn't want to wind up staring at a TV, wearing cheeto-stained shirts and feeling down.

For a while I even made it a point to get up every day, get ready and go somewhere. It didn't really matter where, I just needed to make sure I kept ... well, human.

I can say what not to do and that's spend too much time on here. My work requires me to sit in a secluded room for hours staring at a computer screen, passes the time, but not fun, and spending too much time on the computer is not healthy.

As an academic librarian, I too get a long Christmas holiday. I suspect it will be filled with reading books and doing things around the house.

Oh gosh - I would love to have a week or two off so I could stay home! I have two novels to get going and lots of research. Since I'm also doing freelance, I don't have time for both (but we need the money from the freelancing gig, so that is taking precedence right now).

I also have a lot of books I need to read. And curling up on the couch during the holiday season with a few good classic movies would be a must, too.

I've also recently rediscovered how much I love crafts - used to do them all the time in elementary and high school. Hobby Lobby always has fun stuff to do.

I love to knit and would love to learn to crochet, If I had a little extra time I would probably have a big yarn project going on.

What exactly do you do? I lived in Vegas for about two years (04-06) and worked in the video production/indie film industry. I've done plenty of convention work and miss it terribly. I used to work as an Audio/Visual Tech at The Green Valley Ranch and I too hate Plasma's!!

Have you heard of Rhino Staging?

I was out of work for most of this past summer. Were it not for copious amounts of exercise and reading I think I would have gone crazy.

I'm a Union Electrician LU 357, but I only do conventions, got burnt out on construction. So I am what they affectionately call a "showgirl" at the union hall. lol With the CES show coming up its going to be a lot of hanging plasmas that the authorized techs aren't authorized to do (we get everything above 6 feet, that is on all the shows.)

I'm trying to think if I have seen Rhino Staging shirts or not.....

Yep, I was at the gym this morning, and tell just a few minutes ago was reading an old book lol. I'm afraid I am going to revert back to my classic nerdy ways. I have always been reader, I can sink into a book and read it in day, sigh. [huh] I am trying very hard not to pester my friends...lol....so far I am doing very well....hopefully I will still have friends by the 15th.:p

Personally, I am a sewing and craft addict, so that is the route I would go, but I'm also a huge fan of the public library system. I come home with big stacks of books when I don't have the time to read them!lol It would give you a chance to read anything you have been wanting to, read up on any skill you're curious about, or even find/try out some new recipes.
