There are a number of posters featuring the Boeing 314. It was the "Concorde" of it's day - as it were! Here is a Google link to most of them:

I myself am a collector of another much rarer bird, the Douglas DC-4E which would have been the "Airbus A380" of it's day. A one of a kind triple-tailer like the Boeing 314 and the Lockheed Constellation. I've got a pretty good collection going, so if you see items around your area, let me know - I might need it!

I love those old clipper posters! While I've seen a lot of DC-4s and DC-6s flying as forest fire bombers (air tankers as they're called...I used to be a wildland firefighter), I've never seen the triple-tailed 'E' model before now. I will certainly keep an eye open for any prints, posters, models, etc. that I might come across. If you like the old clippers, take a look at "A Salty Piece of Land." It's a great book written by Jimmy Buffett with some interesting flying boat/aviation tales.

I love the 314s. There is just something about those big flying boats. I've been looking forever for a copy of China Clipper, which I've never seen. I've gotten permission from the wife to put up a photo or poster of a flying boat in the living room. I was debating on the various shots of the China Clipper over the Golden Gate bridge, but I'll have to check out these posters, too.

I've also never seen the DC-4E. Fascinating! Did the triple tail improve the DC-4's performance? They seem identical, otherwise.

The 'triple-tail' concept grew out a rather simply dilemma. All previous aircraft were conventional gear (tail draggers). The new tricycle gear designs thrust the empennage too high for all the standard hangers. The triple-tail design feature actually meant smaller verticle stabilizers that would squeeze through the hanger doors! Eventually some high paid engineer type figured out, why not just cut an extra center door section above the existing hanger doors to allow a big single fin to pass through! Genius, I tell ya!!

From an aerodynamic standpoint the tri-tail assembly DID add some yaw stability to the aircraft as it placed the vertical stabilizers and rudders directly in the aft thrust 'prop wash' of the engines. Not so much though that the design disappeared off the tables rather quickly. The 'Connie' Super G was the last of the 'triple tails'.

Just so you all know, there is currently no FL based image hosting. You need to use a service to host the images.

Just imagine with the amount of images we have, the amount of additional server space needed.


I use photobucket as well, but there are quite a few different services.


oh and to make this on topic...

Some of us are quite fond of any Boeing product, new or old. *cough cough*

I always thought that the only ways to fly were either on a zeppelin of a big magnificent flying boat. Is there a specific reason for which they became pass?© other than the ole "faster, cheaper, more unbearable" race? (the flying boats, that is)

Cost of operation was a major factor, coupled with the fact that you'd need a large body of water any place you'd want to service. As jet passenger liners came into vogue, airlines saw no reason to use an aircraft which had such restrictive requirements, and concentrated on volume of passengers and maximizing their coverage of the nation's and world's airways, which were primarily land-based.

As I recall, the DC 4E never made it into service...or did it? Anybody here know what a DC 5 is? It was a twin engine high wing design desinged in part as a replacement for the DC 3, but the DC 3 just proved to be too economical to operate and the new aircraft didn't sell.

I've heard it said that MD-Boeing could STILL sell the DC-3 if they started making it again. I don't doubt it for a second.

(MD-Boeing refers to the McDonnel-Douglas/ Boeing merger, which in the Seattle area is described as "MD buying Boeing with Boeing's Money".;) )
