Hey! I see them the on 'bay every now and then, and they were once as common as carrots, so let's see 'em and some commentary because when this personal recession I'm going through right now ends, I'm seriously considering one...though summer will be over by then...it pays to be ready for next year!

Since I finally won a vintage topper on the Mighty Bay, the final piece of my collection will likely be a boater. I've never worn one, but they seem very stiff looking to me. I'm guessing I'd need to be very careful with sizing, no? Are they as unforgiving of being too small as, say, a bowler?

Some have flex joints in the brim, but the body is stiff. I'm not sure how one would take to stretching - probably not well at all.

I have a nice stetson boater - but unfortunately it's a 7 1/8, not my size, so it's on a well-known auction site right now.

As per sizing, make sure when you get a boater it is one size larger than your normal hat size. I'm a 7 1/2, but my (non-vintage) boater is a 7 5/8. I'm far from an expert, but I believe this is because of the way the sweat band is sewn in - there is a slight gap between the band and the inside of the actual hat, apparently to allow the band to breathe better.

I have one. Want another that fits a bit better. I wore the one I have to the recent Gamble house tour that the local Loungers took.

Good hats if you like the inflexible hard styles that can't be molded to fit your head.
