For some reason, 1930’s fedoras and Panama hats are in huge demand, but not so much the boater/skimmer. I like them and I’m always looking for more.

I posted a photograph of my grandfather in a boater earlier in this thread. Some one said it was an Italian boater, which made sense because he was born there and emigrated to NYC when he was 17.

My latest boater; another Ponte Rialto. These are workhorse boaters. The build and materials are orders of magnitude better than some of the other recent boaters so commonly encountered.

The floating sweatband is oh so comfortable and allows me to wear either a 7 1/2 or a 7 5/8 on my 7 5/8 long oval head.

I really wanted to pick up a boater, but I tried one on last time I was in Atlanta and it just didn't seem to suit me.

This may be one of the nicer hats that I'm just going to have to give up the notion of wearing. Of course it could also be because I wasn't there looking for a boater and I was too singularly focused to give the boater a fair shake.

I think some time and several wearings and you’d come along. I don’t find them as versatile as a Panama of a Milan “fedora,” but with the right outfit they rock. Wear them with a linen jacket, seersucker suits/jackets, etc. I personally like them when dressed up. Panamas works well dressed up or down.

The good: As mentioned above by @deadlyhandsome, the floating sweatband is amazingly comfortable. I'm also loving the tri-colored ribbon treatment in black, gold, and red.

The bad: Quite stingy on the brim. Based on what I read in this thread must be a later model (possibly from the late 50s early 60s revival?). Not quite what I was expecting when I purchased it, but then again somewhat of an impulse buy. (Hey, I was spending the day at the in-laws.)

I was going through my straws today and found this......forgot about it....
A 30's Keith......logo says "Quality Unexcelled".....also in the top ribbon of the logo, it says.."Coney Blend" which is funny as Coney is a type of rabbit used for fur felts....pretty sure this is made of straw! I am sure they just use the same logo for all their hats.

Picked this one up yesterday. It has been sitting in that shop for some time now and it isn't my size.
Mayser panama boater in a size 58. Brim at 5,8cm and crown between 8,5 and 9cm. Not as stiff as a traditional boater would be, which can be seen best looking at the side and front views, where the weight of the hat makes the top bulge up somewhat on the hat stand. So quit flexible and a fun summer hat.

Here is a fine quality sewn braid boater. The "ovalized sixteenths" application shows a first use in trade date in early 1933. A seven dollar straw was nothing to sneeze at in the mid 1930s. This one shows little evidence of having been worn in the hot NYC summer.
