The price was $ 110. I'd like to change the ribbon for a black one.

The bones are there for sure! Great looking straw. I agree that the ribbon has seen better days. Pity, as it is a hoot! You may have issues with changing the width of the ribbon, there may be some fading from age, and leaving a difference in color under the current ribbon vs. the rest of the hat. Nice find. I would hope someone of greater knowledge here can give an idea of age. It is a looker, you will turn heads in a crowd with this one.

Some of the braids / plaits were woven in Japan so they also sourced hats. I seem to recall other Japanese made Boaters being posted here. It could be 1920s or maybe 1930s.

Why do you think Cavanagh sourced this Boater?

Dogman has a Boater with a similar mark. Might want to contact him to see if he has any additional information. My guess is that is a whole seller non branded hat sold to hat shops.

Few days ago, I saw a Cavanagh Japanese boater with the same marks on the sweatband. I've seen quite a few with the same mark, with master mode, showerproof. It is definitely a Japanese. I also check Japanese auction sites for boaters and most of them have the mark above.

Bought 4m of 5,2cm wide ribbon and this is the result. Luckily much of it left, so I can remake it anytime :)

My first boater!
This Brent arrived today. It seems to be in excellent condition, clean with a nice interior and a supple sweatband.

There is no stamping on the sweatband, but it seems to be original. No idea of the date or maker. A note to self: next time I buy a boater, go for a 7 1/4. I thought it would be better shimming down a 7 3/8, but unless this is just an extra large 7 3/8 boaters seem to run big. Took a few shim strips of thin cork gasket material all around to get it to stay on without it spinning when I turn my head.
I had been delaying trying out the boater world, half because I thought I wouldn't like the look, and half because I knew deep down that I would and have a whole new category of obsession...looks like the latter was more accurate!

Sent from thin air using electricity and other wizardry.

I picked up my Dobbs Boater of the Bay last summer because it was a 7 1/4 LO, it was a perfect fit, by luck. This is a great looking straw Moe. I've seen many Brent felts, but this straw is special. Cool size tag, wish there were more clues as to it's vintage for you. Yay Moe!

Looks like a Bedfordshire stencil boater. Probably made by Olney, that sold to Brent for retailing. Made with flower edged straw plait. Looking at the perfect lining of straw probably an early Olney or a Dunn & Co.

Thanks Red!
It's not bad for a first stab at the world of boaters!
