I actually think the agent standing next to Van Alden is the one whose Fedora really shines in that picture. The felt quality looks great. -M

If I were more adept at this digital stuff I'd post a picture or two of Dunn Purnsley during his meeting with Chalky White in Episode 9, wherein they engage in a somewhat more amicable exchange than their initial one earlier this season. I couldn't tell you how period accurate his attire is, but it's great look regardless.

Agreed, and the shade is worthy of Optimo - it's pretty difficult to say for sure whether it's green or brown. So subtle! -M

Only one hat on "Boardwalk Empire" has impressed me ... maybe because it's such a freakin' rare piece. On a recent episode, Nucky wore a straw flat cap whose proportions and silhouette are authentically '20s.


My guess is that it's a vintage cap. I've certainly never seen a new one like it ... and can only dream to find a vintage example. 1920s (or '20s-looking) straw caps NEVER seem to show up anywhere!

Just a thought, but you might try asking Graham - I doubt he made it for the show, but he does deal in Milans, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's had some experience with flat caps. He might be able to put the two skills together. -M

I'll ask him. Thanks! Milan straw flat caps do exist and are still made for the mass market, but they do not have the '20s-'30s look of Nucky's cap. Also, the weave on Nucky's looks special to me: the warp and weft seem to curve or arc toward each other, intersecting.

I was actually not aware that milan flat caps existed. When I first saw Nucky's, my eyes bugged out. Interesting to know, thanks. It also improves the odds that Graham might be able to help you, imho. -M

Rusty it's not in his character to wear a fedora only homburg's. Same with the clothes he wear's I posted a link about how the wardrobe designers worked on the how the character looks.

That's my Borsolino I picked up from Bond. It is so soft it does it's own thing as I am sure you know.

Not entirely true actually:

Season 1 Episode 1, right when he's going over to the Casino to confront Rothstein about his "lucky streak."

You're right though that he generally seems to stick with his Homburgs, and I definitely don't see him in a C-crown. -M
