Blue suit, what color Fedora?

I see blue as a color that can go both ways; the warmer color family (i.e. browns and tans), or the cooler color family (black and dark grey). Lighter grey can work with brown, in my opinion. I steer clear of mixing browns and black. So for example, for a blue suit with cream pinstripes, I wear black shoes (so thus a black belt and carry a black leather wallet); and my Blue Smoke VS, a black hat, or a cream hat.

But if I wear it with brown shoes (and brown belt), a black hat in my mind would clash, so I'll wear a brown hat of mine. I see brown as more casual; more for 'man about town' weekend wear, than black which I reserve for more formal occasions.

My $0.02 for today.
Cheers,

Hi

Blue suit with Brown shoes is forbidden by the Dress for Success book, I swear it.

If you are applying for a job, or going to a funeral, where black. If you already have the job, or are going out, dark brown is fine, however, always wear dark blue socks!

Should I go for brown, tan, or black? I know it's not exactly hat related, but I suppose I should get shoes to match?

All this is person, hat and suit-specific, but I can wear dark brown hats with my blue blazer. Might work with a tan color also. In that case I would go for the brown or tan-tone shoes. With my blue suit, other than a gray hat, I'm having a harder time matching hats. Black shoes with black, blue or gray hat; brown shoes with brown type hat. But the ultimate arbiter is the mirror. Some combos look right, and others are just wrong.

For Christmas Eve, I'm wearing my new gray windowpane suit with my moonstone Akubra Fed IV and cordovan shoes. I find that cordovan/burgundy goes with just about everything, which is a big help on business trips when I need more than one suit but don't want to take more than one pair of shoes.

I find a use for several of the basic colors. Personally, I find that a bone colored hat, cream, or white will blend with just about anything. Everyone has their own ideas. If I only had the 3 colors you mentioned, I would choose tan. Hats are a very personal thing. Here are some ideas:

If it is dark blue, I'd go with dark brown hat - looks pretty good. But blue is a great colour in the sense that it fits with many other colours as well, so try them out!

Dover grey hat with a black band and Black low quarter for show and black ankle boot when you have some walking to do. A Black hat with a Black band just looks to dark for the blue suit.

Mine was made custom by Art Fawcett. As to factory hats I think Akubra is the best deal going. You can get a nice Stylemaster in Moonstone and that should fill your bill.

Stetsons look great but fall apart after being in the rain. Akubras don't. I can't speak to Dobbs or Biltmore, etc.
